M&S trials paper bags to offer plastic-free alternative

M&S Food is testing paper bags at a few of its UK stores in an effort to provide a plastic-free alternative.

Over the course of the next month, the shop will test paper bags in ten of its locations, including those in Maidstone, Hedge End, Bluewater, Kings Road, Hackney, Nottingham, Newcastle, Vanguard, Rochdale, and Falkirk.

The paper carrier bags were created to keep their strength and durability and can hold up to 15kg.

M&S Food technical director Andrew Clappen said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to reuse carrier bags and offer them durable options that work for them.

“This trial is part of our test and learn approach to finding the best sustainable carrier bags for customers that they can – and want to – keep using again and again.”

If the trial is successful, M&S may roll out the plastic-free alternative to stores across the country.

The announcement comes after M&S purchased the intellectual property of Thread, a fashion personalisation website that went bankrupt.

Thread's source code and algorithms will be integrated into the M&S website as part of the pre-packaged deal.

This will allow M&S to make clothing recommendations based on style, size, and budget.
