9 Key Questions You Need to Answer In Your Job Interview

Job interview Array

Interviews are usually taxing experiences where one slip answering the questions could mean you lose the opportunity to land a job you really want.

One stumbled answer to a question could mean game over, so you need to be prepared.

You need to consider whether it’s a one-to-one interview, or whether you’re going to be grilled by a panel of people.

Preparation is key so you’re ready for anything the interviewer throws at you.

A lot of companies will now ask you about times in your previous roles where you experienced conflict and how you resolved it.

The idea of this is to find out how people react to difficult situations as they give a good idea of how good they might be in a team.

Other questions range from highly professional to light-hearted, and you need to be ready for it.

Here are some examples

  • What is the toughest decision you’ve ever had to make?
  • What is your tactic when you have too much work?
  • How well do you work on a team?
  • How did you manage an assignment that you were upset with?
  • How did you resolve a personal conflict with a colleague?
  • What do you know about our firm and our competitors?
  • What are the two things that you didn’t like about your earlier job?
  • How did trust in your last job prepared you for this one?

You may also be asked to tell a joke.

Yes, really.

Bosses will be looking for someone with the skills they need for their team to do the job as well as possible.

However, good bosses will also be aware of the dynamic of the team.

They could be very wary of employing someone who looks great on paper but might be disruptive or unpleasant in the team.

If you can show you’ve got a sense of humor and that you’re a fun person who enjoys being around others the boss might go for you over someone who’s equally qualified but lacking in spark.

Tips for answering Interview Questions

Interviews are more than just sitting and answering questions though.

There are a whole range of extras you can do to give yourself an advantage.

You should always

  • Research the company and position: Before the interview, it’s important to research the company and the position you are applying for. This will help you understand the company’s values, goals, and mission, as well as the specific responsibilities of the job.
  • Practice answering common questions: While you shouldn’t memorize your answers, it can be helpful to familiarize yourself with common interview questions and prepare some notes or bullet points to reference during the interview. You can also practice answering these questions out loud in front of a mirror or with a friend.
  • Dress appropriately: It’s important to dress professionally and appropriately for the interview, regardless of the company’s dress code. Make sure your clothing is clean, ironed, and fits well.
  • Arrive early: Plan to arrive at the interview location early to allow for any unexpected delays or traffic. This will also give you time to check your appearance and mentally prepare for the interview. If you are delayed ring the company to let them know in plenty of time, and make sure you apologise.
  • Bring necessary materials: Bring extra copies of your resume, a pen and notepad, and any other necessary materials requested by the employer.
  • Use relaxation techniques: Before the interview, try using breathing techniques or other relaxation exercises to calm yourself and reduce anxiety. Take a moment to clear your head and focus on what you want to get across.
