Job Description Position Summary The Dean of Strategic Planning and Academic Resources is responsible for resources that support the academic programs of the College and for leading long-term academic and strategic planning efforts. Direct reports to the Dean are the Director of the Libraries, Director of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Director of Athletics and Physical Education, Executive Director of the Wimpfheimer Nursery School and Infant Toddler Center, Director of Sustainability, Director of the Preserve at Vassar, Director of the Environmental Cooperative, Director of Exploring Transfer, the Faculty Housing Manager, and the Assistant Dean of Strategic Planning. The Associate Dean of Faculty and Planning reports jointly to the Dean of Strategic Planning and Academic Resources and the Dean of Faculty. The Dean plays both a strategic and management role in ensuring that academic areas outside the curriculum and the academic departments and programs meet the needs and goals of the College as well as envisioning improvements in services in these areas. The Dean plays a leadership role in long-term strategic planning and resource allocation in support of the educational mission of the College. The Dean of Strategic Planning and Academic Resources works closely with the rest of the President's senior team, including the Dean of the Faculty, who serves as the chief academic officer, and the Dean of the College, the chief student affairs officer. Position responsibilities: Ensures academic resources are managed so as to optimally support the mission of the College; with president, manages and shepherds ongoing process of planning and priority setting for the College. Carries out educational policies adopted by the faculty, the Dean of Strategic Planning and Academic Resources is responsible to the faculty. Leads the College's effort in collaboration with Vice Presidents of Finance & Administration, Development, and Communication as well as president to assign and manage College's space, repurposing and renovating existing buildings and other physical assets, and design and implement new building projects. Play key role as liaison to Town of Poughkeepsie officials pertaining to building projects; coordinate internal and external architects, engineers, and planners for successful planning of building projects. Plans and prioritizes the allocation of space for academic uses. Supports the Vice President for Finance and Administration in working to ensure that the College's resources are able to sustain the College's mission for future generations. In consultation with the President and the faculty athletic representative, reviews recommendations on appointments, extensions, reappointments, promotions and salaries submitted by the Department of Athletics and Physical Education. Chairs or participates as member of committees as designated in the By-Laws of the Faculty and the Committees section of the Governance. Staffs the Buildings and Grounds committee and the Trustee Investor Responsibility committee of the Board of Trustees. Administers salary and operating budgets for the areas within the position's purview. Consults with the Dean of Faculty, Vice President of Finance and Administration, and Faculty Compensation Committee on faculty compensation, including housing. Develops sound human resources practices for all direct reports, including maintaining current job descriptions, setting goals, providing access to training and professional development, as is possible, executing performance management reviews, and administering corrective action, if appropriate. This position description complements the responsibilities delineated in the By-Laws of the Board of Trustees, as amended by resolutions of the Board. Required knowledge, skills and abilities Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree. Experienced academic and administrative leader with intellectual vision. Experienced in managing resources including people and budgets. A record of administrative, financial and budgetary experience, the ability to build consensus in an academic environment, and a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Must have academic accomplishments and a deep commitment to the liberal arts, must be a practiced scholar and teacher. Ability to provide engaged leadership for all elements of the Vassar community. Strong management, supervisory, planning, and financial skills. Outstanding listening, facilitation and communication skills. Ability to collaborate across multiple constituencies. Occasional travel may be required. Compensation The starting annual base salary range for this position is $190,000-$240,000(USD) When extending an offer, Vassar College considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, budget, and other market and organizational considerations.
