Overview:

The Tool and Die maker will be responsible of planning, laying out and performing all bench and machine operations to construct, alter and repair intricately designed and constructed tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, etc.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Construct and repair new and existing dies, fixtures, gauges, etc.
  • Construct replacement die parts.
  • Set-up and operate all department equipment (includes turning, grinding, milling, drilling and cutoff machines, cutting tools, etc.).
  • May act as lead on given tooling projects interacting with Engineering, Manufacturing and coordinating Tool Room activities in the construction and repair of new and existing dies.
  • May occasionally do development and experimental work.
  • Ensure quality workmanship and dimensional accuracy of assigned work.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and efficient work area.
  • Assist with the training of new or inexperienced personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED/HSED.
  • Excellent math skills (Adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, geometry, decimals).
  • Journey-level status or equivalent experience.
  • Experience and/or education and demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and precision gauges.
  • Must have own toolmaker tools or be willing to purchase.
  • Demonstrated good attendance and performance per WF standards.
  • Must work consistently within +/- .0001 tolerances.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal & written)
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work within a team
  • Coursework and/or equipment training that is provided internally and/or externally as required by the company and/or individual's needs
  • Customer course work as necessary based upon the individual's experience and/or past training

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Stand in one place 70% of the day.
  • Stand in one place up to 3 hours at any one time.
  • Sit up to 1 hour at a time.
  • Using 2 hands lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Lift from floor up to 4 feet height.

What You'll Be Doing Tool Building & Maintenance
  • Analyze blueprints and plan tooling layouts
  • Build, modify, and maintain cutting tools, jigs, dies, and fixtures
  • Set up and operate manual machines (lathes, mills, grinders, etc.)
  • Use surface plates, micrometers, and comparators to ensure tolerances are spot-on
️ Machining & Assembly
  • Lay out and measure metal stock for machining
  • Operate 4-slides and related production equipment
  • Assemble complex tooling and mechanisms with precision
  • Use hand tools, gauges, and CAD drawings to bring tools to spec
Inspection & Troubleshooting
  • Perform quality checks and ensure compliance with manufacturing standards
  • Diagnose tooling problems and develop on-the-spot solutions
  • Maintain clean and organized workstations and return all tools to proper storage
  • Track and report tooling effectiveness, first-piece inspections, and statistical data
Collaboration & Documentation
  • Work closely with engineers, supervisors, and production teams
  • Document changes, updates, and tool designs
  • Follow all safety protocols and contribute to process improvements
Must-Have Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 5 years of tool design/build experience
  • At least 1 year of experience working with 4-slides
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, tool schematics, and tight tolerances
  • Proficiency in manual machining (CNC skills a plus)
  • Strong math skills, including geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to use calipers, micrometers, gauges, and related precision tools
  • Fluent in English (oral and written communication)
Nice-to-Haves
  • TMA Certificate
  • Background in coal heading , small stamping , or wire forming
  • Experience working with flat metal (1 inch wide or smaller)
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD , EDM , or Haas Machines

**Principal Duties/Responsibilities:**
· Performs repairs and adjustments to complex die sets.
· Inspects, measures, troubleshoots, and repairs common failures associated with Tool and Die.
· Develops and writes concise technical documents, including repair findings and reports.
· Heat-treats tools or parts.
· Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.
· Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces, using scrapers, abrasive stones, and power grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms, using hand tools.
· Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, and micrometers.
**Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Behaviors Required:**
· Post-secondary technical training or certification preferred
· At least five years related experience with tool and die tasks
· At least two years previous experience with measurement processes and equipment capabilities used in order to perform repairs and adjustments to complex die sets
· Previous experience with electronic drawing such as AutoCad, Pro-E or Solid Works and ability to modify existing drawings
· Knowledge of Heat Treat process as applied to Tool and Die components
· Knowledge of failure analysis, reliability studies, and performance enhancements

**Position Summary:**
Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists' hand tools.
+ Working knowledge of stamping dies and machining equipment, including grinding, lathes, mills; EDM and CNC experience a plus.
+ Ensure timely delivery of tools to press.
+ Work with production supervisor to identify and correct issues on tools with repeat.
+ Work with production operators to troubleshoot dies as needed.
+ Sharpen/maintain/change-over/repair/PM dies as needed to support production.
+ Maintain accurate die history files and time spent for work performed.
+ Consult with production operators regarding first/last piece approval; execute reaction plan for defective parts as needed.
+ Participate in tagging system, including red tags to ensure tools are ready for production.
+ Monitor inventory of key tooling components needed for assigned dies.
+ Complete tool or engineering change requests to ensure proper documentation control.
+ Ensure good housekeeping in your area.
+ To work in any other area of the plant at the request of your supervisor.
**Required Skill, Education and Experience**
+ Two-year degree in Machine Tool and/or minimum of 6 years Tool & Die or equivalent.
+ Basic reading/writing/math skills
+ Mechanical ability and knowledge of tools and machinery
+ Ability to focus and prioritize tasks and objectives.
+ Good communication skills.
+ Ability to lift/pull up to fifty (50) pounds.
+ Knowledge of the use of measuring devices, blueprints and drawings preferred.
+ Knowledge of multi-die (boltmaking) and one die two blow machinery preferred.
**Compensation Information:**
31.80 - 35.00 USD Hourly
