CNN Chairman Chris Licht ousted, igniting leadership shake-up

CNN

CNN chairman Chris Licht has stepped down abruptly, ending his tumultuous 13-month tenure.

The announcement was made during CNN’s daily editorial meeting, with the CEO of parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, informing Licht of the decision.

Zaslav acknowledged Licht’s role was challenging and regretted that things didn’t work out.

Read More: Twitter head of content moderation quits after Elon Musk’s criticism

He took responsibility for the outcome and assured CNN employees a comprehensive search, both internally and externally, would be conducted to find a new chief for the network, a process that is expected to take time.

Licht faced intense scrutiny following the publication of a lengthy Atlantic magazine profile last week.

It angered the company’s top executives and disheartened staff members who were already disappointed with the network’s ill-fated town hall event featuring former President Trump on May 10.

Since the town hall, CNN’s prime-time ratings, which were already declining, have dropped by 30 percent, indicating audience dissatisfaction.

In the Atlantic article by journalist Tim Alberta, Licht expressed regret over CNN’s coverage under his predecessor, Jeff Zucker.

He was depicted as a leader disconnected from the network’s culture, primarily focused on appeasing Republicans and rebuilding trust with viewers.

Licht’s departure follows a period of turbulence for CNN, characterized by cost-cutting pressures, programming missteps, and declining viewership.

This development deals another blow to Zaslav, who has faced numerous controversies since taking over as the overseeing boss of CNN, Warner Bros.’ film and TV studios, and HBO.

Zaslav had appointed Licht intending to restructure CNN, aiming for a more centrist approach to news and an increased presence of Republicans on the network.

However, the town hall event with Trump in New Hampshire triggered negative reactions and marked a turning point for Licht’s position.

Licht’s successor will need to guide CNN through a changing media landscape, adapting to the decline in pay TV subscribers and the rise of cord-cutting.

Restoring confidence among staff members and rebuilding CNN’s reputation will be crucial tasks for the incoming chairman.

Kellogg’s announces potential employees no longer need to have a degree

Kelloggs

Kellogg’s has made a significant change in its hiring practices by eliminating the requirement for prospective employees to hold a degree.

The company says the decision reflects its commitment to fostering inclusivity and acknowledging that a degree may not always correlate with an individual’s potential contributions to a role.

Following a successful trial within its field sales team last autumn, Kellogg’s is now implementing this policy across its wider business.

The company aims to attract a more diverse and extensive pool of talent, recognizing people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds may have limited access to higher education, as highlighted by research from the Office for Students.

Kellogg’s emphasizes imposing a degree requirement for entry-level positions often overlooks talented individuals based on the assumption that a degree guarantees success in the role.

However, it is important to note certain regulated professions, such as legal counsel or engineers, may still necessitate a degree due to specific qualifications.

Chris Silcock, Kellogg’s UK managing director, told BusinessLive: “At Kellogg, we believe everyone should have a place at the table.

“And, by ditching the need to have a degree we hope more people from different backgrounds will consider Kellogg as somewhere for their career, not just those who went to university.”

On why he decided not to go to university Sam Thornton, Kellogg’s sales director, said: ‘”I spent a while deliberating on whether university was right for me.

“This took a while as there wasn’t a formal pathway without a degree, however, I eventually secured an entry-level role in buying and my career has gone from there.

“I was once approached directly for a role at a retailer where I had all the right experience but was unfortunately turned down due to not having a degree.

“On the whole though, I like to think deciding not to go to university gave me a head start and I have been very lucky that all of my previous employers have recognised it as such.

WOW- The fat-free chips that gave people diarrhea

Wow Chips

A fat-free potato chip. It’s a dream right?

Being able to feast on delicious snacks with none of those problematic calories attached is undoubtedly too good to be true.

Well, it has been tried – to disastrous effect.

READ MORE: OCTOPUS FOR BREAKFAST, DIET COKE ADDICTIONS AND THE CEO WHO TURNED ORANGE – WHAT THE RICH AND POWERFUL LIKE TO EAT

In 1998, Frito-Lay came up with the incredible revelation that fat-free chips (or crisps if you’re in the UK) would be extremely popular with consumers.

The company’s experts were able to come up with versions of Lay’s, Doritos and Ruffles called Wow Chips which they claimed were entirely fat-free.

They contained an ingredient called olestra.

The products exploded, with the company raking in a colossal $347 million in the first few months.

However, on the subject of explosions, there was a fairly considerable side-effect.

It turns out olestra’s molecules are too big to be successfully digested by the human body.

The result? Diarrhea.

And stomach cramps.

So despite the WOW factor (excuse the pun) of 0 fat and just 75 calories in people’s favorite snacks, the side effects were very much a downside of what otherwise seemed a brilliant plan.

By 2000, sales were down to $200 million and the Wow was quietly replaced by “light”.

Lay’s once had the slogan “no-one can eat just one”, but apparently failed to indulge the same thinking when testing its new products.

WOW’s advert from 1999

Surely if its testers were suddenly rushing off to the bathroom minutes after eating their latest product, a few concerns may have been raised.

The FDA also insisted on a warning on the packet, which is not a good look.

Following the rebrand in 2004, executive director Michael F. Jacobson for the Center for Science and Public Interest, summed it up neatly.

Looking for a new job? Find the WhatJobs Career Advice Center here

He said: “If you’re going to buy Lay’s Light, Ruffles Light, or Doritos Light, you also might want to stock up on Cottonelle, Quilted Northern, or Charmin—and plan not to stray too far from the bathroom.“

“Frito-Lay should have rebranded these chips as ‘OW!’ chips.

“This sudden name change is just a desperate attempt to revive a dying brand. Frito-Lay should have just pulled the plug altogether.”

5 weird workplace rules made by millionaire business leaders

Doing things in an unconventional way is a characteristic of most business leaders.

However, most of the time it’s seen as the secret to success.

The rules may seem strange, quirky, and just pointless but they do seem to work for our successful leaders.

READ MORE: Moustaches only, don’t sneeze and don’t use aftershave – Unusual work rules from famous companies

Clear desks and only red or black ink

This rule was made by the legendary businesswoman Martha Stewart.

One of her office rules says that documents must only be written in either red or black ink.

Another rule stops employees from having any personal items on their desks such as family photos, coffee mugs with prints saying “Might be vodka” and office plants.

However, employees are allowed an “approved basket of office supplies.”

Sounds slightly extreme right?

Forced socializing and secrecy

This one was made by Steve Jobs.

As we all are aware the late Steve Jobs’ was a perfectionist and his approach to workplace rules is no different.

He strongly believed that face-to-face collaboration is the best solution for creativity.

The entire Apple headquarters building was built as a massive ring to ensure staff had no choice but to bump into each other and talk.

Apple is also big on secrecy.

According to former employees, the company has strict rules about what their employees can blog, text, and talk about — even with their partners.

Everyone has to refer to products using codenames, and trashcans are monitored for any hidden messages.

They even send out important documents with slightly different variations in punctuation so that if ever there’s a leak, they’ll know who is responsible.

The pizza rule and warehouse restrictions

We all know Jeff Bezos right? Well, he has unique management techniques when it comes to company meetings.

According to Business Insider, the Amazon boss holds his meetings to a “two-pizza rule.”

The idea is based on the idea that if the number of members can’t be fed with two pizzas, then the meeting is too crowded.

He believes smaller meetings are more productive meetings, so he will only attend the ones that comply with his pizza rule.

At the Amazon warehouse, workers have to comply with extremely bizarre rules.

Firstly, they can only drink water that’s in a clear bottle so management is able to see.

They’re also not allowed to wear lipstick, wear a watch, chew gum, or even bring their phone inside the building.

Set a response deadline in every email

This rule was made by Katia Beauchamp who is co-founder of Birchbox.

She said that everyone in the team must include a deadline for when they need a response to their email.

This applies even to the simplest and smallest questions.

The idea is that it makes email prioritization a lot easier and ensures the sender gets the response they need when they need it.

Entire days working only on mobile

The CEO of Google, Larry Page, revealed that he avoids using the computer for work.

With the company’s focus being mainly mobile, he encourages engineers and product managers to spend a day a week working from their mobile phones.

It allows the creators to simplify their products for an optimal mobile experience, but it also pushes them to develop more products to fit the mobile lifestyle.

It’s an effective strategy but you can imagine it will be frustrating for anyone who might have to type out a massive document on their iPhone.

Los Angeles Times to axe 74 newsroom jobs as advertising slows

Los Angeles Times

The Los Angeles Times is cutting 74 newsroom staff as it faces financial pressures from advertising and print readership declines.

The eliminated positions account for approximately 13 percent of its total newsroom workforce.

While reporting jobs are expected to be spared, the cuts will predominantly affect production staff.

Full-time and temporary workers, including a few managers, will lose their jobs.

A substantial number will come from the news and copy editor ranks.

Some photographers, audience engagement editors, and audio producers will also be impacted.

The layoffs were announced by Times Executive Editor Kevin Merida, who expressed the difficulty of the decision given the economic climate and industry challenges.

The announcement drew criticism from the L.A. Times Guild, with its leader, Reed Johnson, calling it “outrageous and reckless.”

He argued the layoffs violated a provision in the collective bargaining agreement, which he believed required the paper to offer buyouts before layoffs.

The Guild also expressed disappointment management did not discuss alternative cost-cutting measures.

The restructuring reflects the ongoing economic challenges the news industry faces, including declining advertising sales and difficulties in attracting digital subscriptions.

The Times has nearly 550,000 digital subscribers but has experienced a slowdown in growth in recent months.

The affected employees, both full-time and temporary, will receive the required notice and compensation as outlined in the labor agreement.

After the cuts, the newsroom will have approximately 500 employees remaining.

The Los Angeles Times, like other prominent news organizations, has faced significant challenges in recent years due to changing media consumption habits, shifting advertising landscapes, and the impact of the pandemic.

This downsizing marks the first significant restructuring since Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong and his wife, Michele, acquired the paper in 2018.

Under their ownership, the Times had avoided large-scale layoffs that had affected numerous other news organizations.

The paper had invested in its newsroom, increasing its staff by more than 150 journalists and launching an entertainment studio.

However, the pandemic severely impacted the Times’ path to profitability as advertising revenues declined.

Executives did not disclose the financial losses incurred by the newspaper.

SEC seeks asset freeze for Binance US units in regulatory lawsuit

Binance

The US government is trying to freeze two Binance unit assets after cracking down on the leading cryptocurrency exchange for reportedly evading regulatory oversight.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says the BAM Management US Holdings and BAM Trading Services units, which Binance presented as independent entities, were controlled secretly by the parent company and its CEO, Changpeng Zhao.

In its motion to the federal court in the District of Columbia, the SEC said the freeze was necessary to safeguard customer assets at Binance’s US operations.

It is due to the companies’ “years of violative conduct, disregard for US laws, evasion of regulatory oversight, and unanswered questions regarding financial transfers and the custody of Customer Assets.”

The initial complaint accused Binance of demonstrating a “blatant disregard of federal securities laws” and alleges the parent firm and Zhao had amassed billions of US dollars while exposing investors’ assets to significant risk.

The SEC is seeking the disgorgement of all ill-gotten gains from Binance and the payment of civil penalties without specifying the amounts.

These recent actions against Binance and Coinbase signal an intensified regulatory crackdown on the cryptocurrency industry.

Google pushes in-person work with new attendance policy

Google

Google is joining the ranks of companies urging employees to return to in-person collaboration as it shifts its focus away from remote work.

CPO Fiona Cicconi said Google will now consider office attendance records during performance reviews and send reminders to employees with frequent absences.

However, she said most employees already adhere to its hybrid work policy, requiring three days in the office per week.

Read More: Amazon employees call for better flexibility in latest strike

She said: “We’ve heard from Googlers that those who spend at least three days a week in the office feel more connected to other Googlers, and that this effect is magnified when teammates work from the same location.

“Of course, not everyone believes in ‘magical hallway conversations,’ but there’s no question that working together in the same room makes a positive difference.”

She said numerous new products announced during its recent I/O conference resulted from in-person work.

She added: “Of course, there will be circumstances where you may not be able to come to the office, like this week’s air quality control warning in Canada and the U.S. East Coast—we always want you to look after yourself and take care of your health.”

According to internal documents, the company will monitor office attendance in the US using badge data, and discussions are underway to extend this practice to other countries.

If employees consistently fail to comply with the attendance policy, HR will intervene and initiate further actions.

Cicconi said moving forward, full-time remote work will only be approved in exceptional cases.

Google revealed plans to bring employees back to the office thrice a week starting April last year.

In 2021, the company announced only 20 percent of staff would be permitted to work remotely full-time.

Google’s commitment to the return of in-person work is evident in its substantial investment.

In 2021, the company announced plans to spend $7 billion on new offices and data centers in the US, expecting a resurgence in physical workspaces.

Numerous companies, including Amazon and Walt Disney, have been encouraging employees to return to physical offices, highlighting the advantages of in-person teamwork.

Some organizations have even linked office attendance to performance evaluations and compensation.

Hundreds of Amazon employees recently protested the company’s return-to-work policies in Seattle.
