Amazon plans to increase its workforce in Germany to 40,000 permanent employees by the end of the year as part of a new €10 billion investment.

This investment, announced at its German headquarters in Munich, will raise Amazon’s German workforce from around 36,000 in 2023.

Most of the investment will focus on expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s cloud computing subsidiary.

Germany remains a critical market for Amazon outside the US.

In May, Amazon announced a new cloud infrastructure project, the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, in Brandenburg, with an expenditure of €7.8 billion.

This brings the total planned investments in Germany to €17.8 billion.

Of the newly announced €10 billion, Amazon will allocate 8.8 billion towards expanding AWS in the Rhine-Main area by 2026.

This expansion includes expenditures on construction, data center operations, and the import of machinery and software.

AWS, which manages server operations and IT services for corporate customers, anticipates growing demand for cloud services in Germany.

Stefan Höchbauer, AWS head for Germany and Central Europe, said: "Germany is at the heart of our pan-European innovations."

In addition to cloud services, Amazon continues to expand its online retail infrastructure.

A new logistics center opened in Erfurt in May, with another set to open in Horn-Bad Meinberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, later this summer.

Previously, a logistics center was inaugurated in Großenkneten, Lower Saxony, in August 2023.

The company is also constructing two new headquarters in Munich and Berlin, consolidating employees across several smaller locations.

Since 2010, Amazon has invested over €77 billion in Germany, reinforcing its commitment to the region.
