John Lewis CEO Peter Ruis has announced plans to increase shop floor staff to improve the retailer’s performance.

To achieve this, Ruis is renegotiating contracts with fashion brands, offering lower commission rates in exchange for more employees working on their concessions.

This strategy aims to replicate the successful sales culture of John Lewis’ beauty halls throughout the store.

Appointed as CEO in January, Ruis believes that staff levels on the shop floor have been reduced too much.

John Lewis’ research indicates that more staff could boost sales in concessions by double-digit percentages, benefiting both the retailer and its suppliers.

While fashion brands generally support the department store’s initiative, several suppliers have indicated they would need reduced commission rates to participate.
