Elon Musk says Tesla staff could increase despite “super bad feeling” about economy

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has suggested the company's staff numbers might increase, weeks after he emailed staff telling them to expect cuts.

Musk appeared to retract his statements about job cuts for salaried employees in a tweet reply Saturday, June 4, writing that the number of salaried employees may not change significantly and could even rise.

Tesla's headcount will rise over the next 12 months, according to the Twitter account @WholeMarsBlog.

Musk replied to the tweet and said that the total number of Tesla employees hired would rise, but that salaried staff "should be fairly flat."

Musk did not say whether existing salaried employees would be converted to hourly workers or if new employees would be hired at Tesla.

Musk had previously stated in an email titled "pause all hiring worldwide" sent to Tesla executives on Friday that he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy. As a result, Musk stated that he would have to lay off 10 percent of his salaried employees,.

Musk stated that the number of Tesla hourly employees would increase. The memo, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, does not apply to anyone "building cars, battery packs, or installing solar."

Musk had sent a memo to his executive team two days prior, telling them to return to the office or resign, according to Electrek.

By an SEC filing, Tesla had 100,000 employees at the end of last year. A spokesperson for Tesla did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment
