Elon Musk says Twitter staff need to be “extremely hardcore” as he orders “long hours at high intensity”

Elon Musk has demanded Twitter staff to either work “long hours at high intensity” or leave.

The world's richest man's demands are said to have annoyed the remaining workers at the social media giant, which is already carrying out mass layoffs.

Employees have till Thursday, November 17, to decide whether to remain at the firm and work an intense schedule or leave.

The new boss told staff in an overnight email with the subject line “A Fork in the Road.”

Those who decide to leave would be given three months' severance.

Mr. Musk said: “Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore.

“This will mean working long hours at high intensity.

“Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.“

The Tesla CEO has been shaking up Twitter's workforce and leadership since his $44 billion takeover.

Staff were pressed to overhaul Twitter's products and business model, reconsider its content-moderation policies, and reassure advertisers who were concerned about its impact.

Mr Musk's Twitter leadership style is said to be a hybrid of exhortations, warnings, and sarcasm.

Several of its workers said that they were fired after calling out Mr. Musk on the social media platform.

Some said they got an email notifying them that their actions had violated corporate policy without giving any details.

Others said the sackings are said to be in response to critical statements they made on Twitter or internally on Slack.

The company has also laid off a number of contractors over the weekend, including those in engineering, customer service, marketing, and product design.

The exact degree of the reduction is not yet known.

In his most recent email to workers, Mr Musk said Twitter will become "more engineering-driven" in the future.

The billionaire's efforts to leave his mark on the social media platform have coincided with the fast changes in the workforce.
