Food delivery company Getir is preparing to lay off employees at its UK office, just a week after laying off 100 at its US headquarters.

The layoffs are the result of Getir's $1 billion acquisition of quick commerce rival Gorillas at the end of the year.

The layoffs will not be on the same scale as those seen in 2022, according to a source, citing the 4,400 employees who lost their jobs at the quick commerce giant.

Getir's largest market outside of Turkey is the United Kingdom.

A number of senior Gorillas employees have already begun their new roles at Getir, with Christopher Chaaya named as the company's new UK general manager, a position he previously held at Gorillas.

The layoffs in 2022 reflected the brutal year for the rapid food delivery sector, which saw consolidation and job losses as companies tried to cut costs and turn profitable.

The combined entity was valued at $10 billion by Getir and Gorillas, which is lower than Getir's nearly $12 billion valuation at its $768 million Series E raise earlier in 2022.
