HMV to reopen iconic flagship store on Oxford Street four years after closing

HMV is to reopen its flagship store on 363 Oxford Street later this year, after a four-year absence.

The flagship will have the new logo of the entertainment retailer and will be outfitted with the new 'HMV shop' concept.

The new store is intended to carry a wide selection of pop culture products, vinyl, cinema, television, and music technology.

HMV's return to central London is the latest example of the company's extraordinary turnaround under Canadian owner Doug Putman, who took over in 2019.

The first store with the new layout and offerings opened in Solihull in July 2021, to mark the company's 100th anniversary,

The idea will have been taken to 24 new sites and retrofitted to 14 of the existing estate by the end of the year.

Half of the HMV estate will have been converted to 'the HMV Shop' by 2024, indicating a substantial shift for the company.

The firm presently operates 120 stores in the United Kingdom, including a West London site in Westfield, a specialised Fopp store in Covent Garden, and the 25,000-square-foot Vault in Birmingham, Europe's largest entertainment store.

Doug Putman said: “The expansion of our fan-focused pop culture offer is really working for us and the reopening of our flagship represents the culmination of a good few years of hard work.

"We are also opening stores in Europe this year, so while it is the culmination of one phase of work, more excitingly we see it as the launchpad for an exciting new era for HMV.”
