Asda Scraps Four-Day Work Week Trial As Workers Were Exhausted

Asda supermarket store front

Asda has abandoned its four-day working week plan after employees reported feeling exhausted.

The supermarket initially implemented flexible working arrangements in January to address dissatisfaction among store managers.

During the trial, employees in 20 stores worked 44 hours over four days, maintaining the same salary.

However, workers found the longer shifts physically demanding and struggled with the earlier start and later finish times.

Parents said it had led to “difficulties with childcare and school drop offs and pick-ups.”

A company spokesperson said Asda will now trial a 39-hour week spread over five days, which has proven more popular.

This trial will continue until the end of 2024.

Despite the reduced hours, staff will not receive pay cuts.
