American Airlines Flight Attendants Ratify New Contract With Immediate Raises Over 20 Percent

American Airlines Flight Attendants Ratify New Contract With Immediate Raises Over 20 Percent

American Airlines flight attendants have overwhelmingly approved a new five-year labor contract, concluding a protracted and contentious negotiation process.

The deal Was ratified with 87 percent of the vote. It will grant immediate wage increases of up to 20.5 percent for the airline's 28,000 flight attendants. It will be effective from October 1, 2024.

A Major Milestone for Flight Attendants

The new contract comes as a significant relief for the airline’s cabin crew members. The staff have been fighting for improved wages and working conditions since the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the industry.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) heralded the contract as a victory for workers.

Julie Hedrick, president of the APFA said:

"This contract marks a significant milestone for our flight attendants, providing immediate wage increases of up to 20.5 percent, along with significant retroactive pay to address time spent negotiating.”

The raises will be accompanied by retroactive pay to compensate for the period spent in negotiations, ensuring that the cabin crews receive compensation for their persistence throughout the process.

Striking A Deal After Pandemic Disruptions

The approval of the contract marks the end of one of the most challenging labor disputes in the airline industry.

Negotiations between American Airlines and the APFA had been ongoing for several years. The Covid-19 pandemic stalled talks as the airline industry grappled with an unprecedented collapse in demand.

During the negotiations, flight attendants threatened to strike if an agreement could not be reached.

The stakes were high, with support from 160 lawmakers and direct involvement from U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Labor Secretary Julie Su, who attended negotiations earlier this year.

The National Mediation Board (NMB) also played a pivotal role in bringing the two sides to a resolution.

A Win for American Airlines Leadership

The new contract is seen as a significant win for American Airlinesm, which faced mounting pressure to resolve the labor dispute. CEO Robert Isom expressed satisfaction with the agreement.

He said:

“Reaching an agreement for our flight attendants has been a top priority, and today, we celebrate achieving this important milestone."

The airline had been eager to avoid a strike, which would have caused significant disruptions to operations. The deal not only secures labor peace but also enhances the airline’s competitiveness by retaining experienced and motivated cabin crew members.

A Broader Trend of Union Victories

American Airlines’ labor deal is part of a broader trend in which unionized workers in various industries have successfully pushed for improved wages and benefits.

Workers across sectors—such as the auto industry and Hollywood—have achieved higher pay through strikes and collective bargaining.

The airline industry has seen similar movements, with flight attendants at United Airlines still in negotiations for a new contract, and Alaska Airlines’ cabin crew recently rejecting a tentative deal.

As the cost of living continues to rise, workers are increasingly demanding better compensation and improved working conditions.

Looking Ahead: The Impact on the Airline Industry

With the American Airlines contract now finalized, attention shifts to other major airlines and their ongoing labor negotiations.

United Airlines, in particular, remains in talks with its flight attendants, and other work groups across the airline industry may use American's deal as a benchmark for their contract discussions.

A New Era for Flight Attendants

For American Airlines flight attendants, the ratified contract represents more than just a pay increase—it signals a new era of recognition for their essential role in the airline’s success.

As labor movements gain momentum across industries, this deal sets a precedent for what can be achieved through persistent negotiations and collective action.

With higher wages and better working conditions now secured, American Airlines flight attendants are better positioned to face the challenges ahead in an ever-evolving airline industry.
