General Motors (GM) has announced plans to lay off approximately 1,695 workers at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas as part of a broader restructuring initiative.
This move will be executed in two phases. The first round of layoffs is set to begin on November 18 and the second on January 12, 2024.
Details of the Layoff Process
- Phase 1: Starting on November 18, GM will temporarily lay off 686 full-time employees and terminate 250 temporary workers.
- Phase 2: In the second phase, scheduled to begin on January 12, 2024, GM plans to lay off an additional 759 full-time workers.
A spokesperson from GM confirmed these details, initially reported by Automotive News, and provided further clarification on the reasons behind this decision.
The Impact on Cadillac XT4 Production
The layoffs are partly linked to GM’s decision to pause production of the Cadillac XT4 model at the Fairfax plant.
The company announced in May it would halt XT4 production after January 2025. This move resulted in temporary layoffs until manufacturing resumes in late 2025.
Both the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Bolt EV will then be produced on the same assembly line.
GM spokesperson said:
“As previously announced in May, GM is investing approximately $390 million in our Fairfax Assembly Plant to add production of the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.”
