Google has announced a $1 billion investment in Thailand, aiming to establish a data center and enhance the country's cloud infrastructure.
This strategic move positions Thailand as a pivotal location for Google’s expansion in Asia. The company has a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) amidst growing competition from companies like Microsoft and OpenAI.
The Investment
The investment is equivalent to 36 billion Thai baht. It marks the creation of Google’s first data center in Thailand, located in the Chonburi province, in the east of the country.
This facility is set to support the growing demand for Google Cloud, AI innovations, and popular Google services such as Google Search, Google Maps, and Google Workspace.
Boosting Digital Infrastructure and AI Growth
According to Jackie Wang, Google’s Thailand Country Lead, the investment aims to unlock new opportunities for businesses, educators, and the broader Thai population.
The data center will play a critical role in supporting AI-driven growth in Thailand.

Google’s Vision for AI in Thailand
Google sees the investment as not just an expansion of infrastructure but also an opportunity to educate and upskill Thai citizens in AI technology.
This move is expected to accelerate Thailand's digital economy. It is currently the second-largest in Southeast Asia. It is projected to reach $50 billion by 2025, according to a report by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company.
Google's investment underscores the importance of preparing the workforce to adapt and leverage these technological advancements.
Google’s Position Amid AI Competition
Google’s investment in Thailand is part of its larger international expansion strategy. The company is growing in the face of competition from tech giants like Microsoft and OpenAI.
Google has traditionally dominated the global search engine market. However, it now faces challenges from generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, which are reshaping the way users access and interact with information online.
Despite helping to pioneer the technology behind generative AI through its early research on transformer models, Google is currently racing to maintain its lead in AI and cloud computing amidst intense competition.
