Chicago Company Fined $1 Million After Staff Developed Severe Lung Disease

An industrial manufacturer failed to protect its employees from 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit molten metal that killed a member of staff.

Ellwood Engineered Castings Co. has been fined $145,184 for 11 violations after an investigation by the US Department of Labor.

The man was working at the bottom of a pit below the casting operation at the time of the incident which led to his death.

The OSHA also determined the company did not develop and implement an effective permit-required confined space program to ensure workers could access and exit the mold pit safely.

It also failed to train employees on the hazards in the pit and exposed workers to fall hazards up to 15 feet.
