Uber Eats ad slammed for peanut allergy joke

Uber Eats has come under fire for its Super Bowl advertisement, which people claim trivialises peanut allergies.

It faces backlash from people and allergy advocacy groups. 

The ad was intended for one of the biggest advertising stages in the US.

It has been denounced by the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) organization for using allergies as a punchline.

The advert features celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, and David and Victoria Beckham.

A man is shown to be allergic to peanut butter in the ad, questioning, "There's peanuts in peanut butter?" 

His confusion and the physical symptoms of his allergy were intended as a humorous element but have instead led to accusations of insensitivity.

Dr Sung Poblete, head of the charity FARE, noted the potential for such portrayals to foster bullying, especially among children. 

The ad's attempt at humor, showing the man later acknowledging that peanuts are a primary ingredient in peanut butter, has not mitigated the backlash.

Food Allergy Canada said that food allergy was "no laughing matter" and urged Uber Eats to edit the ad.

The critique centers on the danger of minimizing food allergies, which can lead to life-threatening reactions known as anaphylaxis.

JD Arland, an Indiana resident with peanut and soy allergies, labeled the ad as "disgusting" and "tone-deaf," sharing his personal experiences with bullying over his condition. 

Despite his outrage, Arland sees an opportunity for Uber Eats to better serve the food allergy community by improving how the app communicates customers' dietary restrictions to restaurants.

Super Bowl ads are a significant aspect of the event's appeal, drawing over 100 million viewers.
