Tesco has confirmed it won't need to ration eggs like Asda and Lidl, despite a shortage throughout the UK.

Despite reports on social media of empty shelves at Tesco stores across the country, the grocer has stated that rationing will not be implemented.

Tesco is currently working with its supplier partners to ensure that customers have access to eggs.

There are currently no purchase restrictions.

Tesco announced new five-year contracts for its egg suppliers earlier this year, signaling its continued commitment to the UK egg industry.

Asda's rationing comes as UK poultry farmers face a record outbreak of avian flu, which is killing millions of birds.

Currently, Asda and Lidl branches limit customers to two boxes of eggs per visit, while Sainsbury's sources eggs from other countries, including Italy.

When a confirmed outbreak occurs on a poultry or egg farm, all of the birds in the affected area are slaughtered.

This means there are fewer chickens and eggs in the supply chain, with egg supply being particularly impacted at the moment.
