Greggs has opened its 2,500th shop as its plan for 3,000 stores in the UK marches on.

The bakery has opened a store in a petrol forecourt at Sainsbury’s in Cobham, Surrey, to reach the milestone.

The company launched its five-year growth plan in 2021, which revealed its aim of opening 3,000 stores by 2026.

It has ambitious plans to open between 140 and 160 shops, with a particular focus on expanding into travel hubs and roadside locations to reach more customers.

The shop in Cobham is its eighth shop with Sainsbury’s, and means there are now 50 branches in UK supermarkets, including Asda and Tesco.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Greggs is a versatile brand.

“That means we can open a full range of formats in a variety of locations, with our digital channels enabling us to extend the reach of each shop even further.

“As well as continuing to nurture and build our presence on the high street, these openings highlight how we continue to expand into more non-traditional locations.

“Our mission is simple – we want Greggs to be accessible, wherever, whenever, and however our customers need us.”
