Shein admits working hour rules breach as it vows to upgrade factories

Fast fashion giant Shein has admitted breaking working hours regulations at its factories in China.

Following an independent inquiry into its factory operating procedures, Shein acknowledged that the law regarding working hours had been broken.

The investigation was carried out after allegations were made workers in two factories in china were doing up to 18 hours a day for as little as 3p per item.

The claims were made in the Untold documentary programme on Channel 4 and also stated that employees only received one day off every month and worked weekends.

Regarding working hours, Shein told PA that “while these are significantly less than claimed in the documentary, they are still higher than local regulations permit”.

The fast fashion behemoth has reduced orders from the manufacturers in China by 75 percent and given them until Saturday, December 31 to adjust their working hours or face potential additional action.

Shein acknowledged that there had been violations of the working hour regulations but asserted independent audits performed by specialists at Intertek and TUVR demonstrate that it "can deny most of the charges" presented in the documentary.

The company also promised to invest £12 million to "assist modernise hundreds of factories in its supply chain."
