Star Wars Day: How George Lucas’ franchise continues to make billions

May 4th is celebrated by Star Wars fans around the world as Star Wars Day.

Fans of George Lucas' mega-franchise will understand the meaning of making May 4 Star Wars Day.

For the uninitiated, the Jedi, the force for good in the epic movies, have the mantra "May the force be with you", which has been changed to "May the fourth be with you" to celebrate the day of all things Star Wars.

Since its debut in 1977, Star Wars has become one of the most successful film franchises in history.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Star Wars franchise has generated a whopping $10.3 billion worldwide.

This includes revenue from the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, the sequel trilogy, and the standalone films like Rogue One and Solo.

The original Star Wars film, Episode IV: A New Hope, was released in 1977 and earned $775 million worldwide.

The film was a massive success, and it spawned two sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

These films earned $538 million and $475 million respectively, bringing the total box office revenue of the original trilogy to over $1.7 billion.

The prequel trilogy, which includes Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, was released between 1999 and 2005.

The prequel trilogy earned $2.5 billion at the box office, with The Phantom Menace being the highest-grossing film of the trilogy with $1 billion in revenue.

The sequel trilogy, which includes Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, and Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, was released between 2015 and 2019. The sequel trilogy earned $4.4 billion at the box office, with The Force Awakens being the highest-grossing film of the trilogy with nearly $2.1 billion in revenue.

In addition to the main saga films, the Star Wars franchise has also produced several standalone films. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released in 2016, earned $1.1 billion at the box office, while Solo: A Star Wars Story, released in 2018, earned $393 million.

The Star Wars franchise has also earned money through merchandise sales, theme park attractions, and video games.

In 2012, Disney purchased Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, for $4 billion, and has since expanded the franchise with new films, TV shows, and merchandise.
