Eurostar pauses Amsterdam-to-London services for six months

Eurostar is to suspend its Amsterdam-to-London services for six months starting in June of the coming year.

It’s due to renovation work in Amsterdam, with officials unable to process cross-Channel passengers until 2025.

The disruption arises from failed negotiations between the Dutch government, the local railways operator, and Eurostar concerning renovations at Amsterdam's central station.

As a result, passengers travelling from Amsterdam and Rotterdam to London will be required to change trains in Brussels.

The outbound travel from London to the Netherlands will continue unaffected.

However, the renovation works at Amsterdam's station will limit the space available for processing London-bound passengers.

These passengers undergo more extensive security and passport checks than those travelling to the Netherlands and neighboring countries.

Despite the disruption, Eurostar did not clarify why the works in Amsterdam would impact passengers boarding in Rotterdam.

Four daily trains operate between London and Amsterdam, with stops in Brussels and Rotterdam.

The full launch of the London-Amsterdam connection took place in October 2020.

Eurostar says the expected disruption duration has been shortened to six months from the initially expected 12.

This suspension adds to Eurostar's recent challenges, including post-Brexit border checks and staff shortages.

It discontinued various routes, such as direct services to Disneyland Paris and connections between London and Marseille via Lyon.

Trains linking the UK to continental Europe have also bypassed two stations in Kent, Ashford, and Ebbsfleet since 2020.

Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave reported a one-third reduction in passengers on the flagship London-to-Paris route in January.
