Tesco To Change Clubcard Logo After Lidl Court Battle

Tesco Store in Manchester, Oldham

Tesco will stop using its Clubcard Prices logo after a defeat in a legal dispute with Lidl.

Lidl claimed that Tesco's logo infringes on its trademark and leverages Lidl's reputation for value.

The clash, ongoing since 2020, concluded with the Court of Appeal upholding a High Court decision from last year in favour of Lidl

Lidl said it was "delighted," while Tesco said it was "disappointed."

The disagreement began when Tesco introduced a new Clubcard scheme logo featuring a yellow circle on a blue square, similar to Lidl's branding.`

Lidl said that Tesco had "prolonged the dispute... deceiving customers for another year".

"We are delighted to see that the Court of Appeal has now agreed with the High Court that Tesco's use of its Clubcard logo is unlawful.

"We expect Tesco now to respect the Court's decision and change its Clubcard logo to one that is not designed to look like ours."

Tesco reassured its customers and said it was "consistently the cheapest full-line grocer."

The retailer said: "We are disappointed with the judgement relating to the colour and shape of the Clubcard Prices logo but would like to reassure customers that it will in no way impact our Clubcard Prices programme.

"Clubcard Prices, irrespective of its logo, will continue to play a central role in rewarding our Clubcard members with thousands of deals every week."

Consumer expert Kate Hardcastle said while the decision might be disappointing for Tesco, it presents an opportunity to create a unique and impactful new logo.

However, she noted that redesigning the logo would involve significant costs.
