Arup cuts 200 jobs after projects including HS2 slow

Arup has announced a series of job cuts, including positions held by senior staff, due to a decline in its projects,.

The firm has been particularly hit by the halt in the HS2 construction.

It's estimated that around 200 individuals have been affected by this recent round of layoffs.

Arup's total workforce in the UK is approximately 6,000, which includes about 57 architects.

The company has attributed this decision to the ongoing market unpredictability and a deceleration in some of its projects.

Arup emphasized the need to ensure the continued efficiency, versatility, and resilience of their business in light of these challenges.

Arup stated: "As an employee-owned organization, we have a responsibility to all our members, clients, and collaborators to ensure that we are right-sized for the type of work our talented designers, engineers, and sustainability consultants are tackling, both today and in the future."

The company has also offered voluntary redundancy to its senior staff members, and discussions regarding this are still ongoing.

This decision follows the government's move to pause the HS2 project in March.

Arup has been involved with the major railway initiative since 2015.

Projects under review

Arup has also been deeply involved in the Grimshaw-designed HS2 terminus at Euston.

This project is currently under review.

This means it could undergo its third revision, potentially reducing the number of platforms to as few as seven.

In addition to the HS2-related projects, the broader economic landscape has shown signs of a slowdown.

Data from industry trackers Glenigan in March indicated a 40 percent drop in the value of projects starting on-site compared to 2022, with the housing sector being particularly impacted.

Globally, Arup employs around 15,500 people.

As per their latest accounts for the year ending in March 2022, the company reported an international turnover of £1.89 billion, with fees from UK offices surpassing £700 million.
