Popeyes was sued for running out of chicken sandwiches

A man looks cross in a Popeye's restaurant

Popeyes is a popular fast-food chicken outlet many people see as the main competitor to the world-famous KFC.

It is rapidly expanding and recently announced a massive UK expansion after opening its first restaurants there.

However, like a lot of fast-food outlets, it seems to have attracted bizarre legal action.

In 2019, a man called Craig Barr took Popeyes to court.

He demanded $5,000 because a store in Tennessee had run out of its famous chicken sandwich.

He sued the company for wasting his time.

His lawsuit also claimed the company deceptively advertised the sandwich, which was only available in August.

Barr also tried to claim damages to his car, which he claimed happened in the restaurant's car park.

Barr represented himself in the case.

Another claim was that he was left humiliated because his friends laughed at him when he told them of his failed quest for a chicken sandwich.

The case didn't ever make it to court.

Similar cases against fast food giants have not gone well for the claimants, so who knows how it would have panned out for Mr Barr?

The irony is that the sandwich is now a permanent fixture on the Popeye's menu, so you would assume he's managed to try one in the five years since his traumatic experience.
