U.S. auto safety regulators announced on Friday that they are investigating Tesla's recent recall of over 2 million vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aims to determine if the December recall effectively addresses the concerns with Tesla's Autopilot system.

This follows crash incidents and preliminary tests on updated vehicles.

Reuters reports Tesla, which initiated its largest-ever U.S. recall in December, intended to update nearly all of its domestically operating vehicles.

The recall targeted improvements to ensure drivers remain attentive while using the advanced driver assistance system.

The NHTSA's probe includes Tesla's Model Y, X, S, 3, and Cybertruck, spanning model years 2012 to 2024.

The investigation follows findings from an ongoing safety examination of Autopilot initiated in August 2021,

The probe linked the system to at least 13 fatal crashes and numerous serious injuries due to probable driver misuse.

The agency also expressed concerns that the Autopilot name might overstate the system's capabilities, potentially leading drivers to place undue trust in the automation.

Despite updates to address these issues, the NHTSA believes that the changes may not have fully mitigated the safety risks, as echoed by Consumer Reports in February.

The consumer watchdog criticized the updates for addressing minor issues rather than substantive safety problems and called for more decisive action from the automaker.
