Elon Musk’s SpaceX sues NLRB over illegal staff firings

SpaceX corporate headquarters

SpaceX has sued the US labor board which accused it of illegally firing employees who circulated a letter criticizing owner Elon Musk.

The move comes just a day after the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) charged SpaceX with violating federal labor laws.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Thursday, January 4, claims the NLRB director's suit is unconstitutional.

In 2022, around 400 SpaceX employees signed and circulated a letter deeming Musk's public statements and conduct embarrassing and distracting.

Eight workers were subsequently terminated.

SpaceX's legal filing says the circulated letter led to major disruptions among its nationwide workforce.

It stressed the terminated staff violated multiple company policies.

Despite requests for comment, the company remained silent on the matter.

A spokesperson for the NLRB declined to provide a statement.

This is not the first time SpaceX has engaged in legal battles against government actions.

In September 2023, the company sued the Justice Department to halt a hiring discrimination case.

It argued the case's administrative court venue violated the Constitution.

In the present NLRB case, SpaceX also raises concerns about the administrative proceedings handling the controversy over staff firings.
