Overview

The American Medical Association (AMA) is the nation's largest professional association of physicians and a non-profit organization. This role is located at our corporate offices in Chicago as a Director II Ethics Policy Development (Hybrid) on the Health, Science, & Ethics team.

Responsibilities
  • Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA)
    • Serve as Secretary to the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA).
    • Oversee the development and updating of ethics guidance in the AMA Code of Medical Ethics.
    • Coordinate with AMA Office of General Counsel and Membership to establish and support a CEJA judicial process that reviews the ethical integrity and fitness of AMA members.
    • Manage strategic planning and prioritization of Council activities and the planning of CEJA’s work at its business meetings including CEJA’s Open Forum at Annual and Interim meetings of the AMA’s House of Delegates (HOD).
    • Oversee the staff who provide substantive support to the Reference Committee on Amendments to Constitution and Bylaws at HOD meetings.
  • Promoting AMA Code of Medical Ethics
    • Maintain and update the Code website which includes the development of ethics cases and legal briefs.
    • Oversee the development of Code-based educational resources for medical students and physicians including UME, GME and CME‑relevant content on the AMA EdHub.
    • Develop Code-based manuscripts for peer‑review publication consideration in leading ethics journals.
    • Create ethics‑relevant content that draws on the ethics guidance from the Code for dissemination across AMA marketing and communication channels.
    • Work with Health Solutions to update and publish the annotated edition of the Code.
  • Internal Collaboration
    • Work with AMA Advocacy to identify legislative and regulatory proposals that warrant ethics review and prepare responses to government stakeholders including Congressional committees, US federal agencies and state legislatures.
    • Work with AMA Enterprise Communications to respond to media inquiries and prepare letters to the editor.
    • Work with AMA Litigation Center to review amicus briefs and other legal documents that the Association plans to submit in court cases.
    • Prepare responses to inquiries related to ethics from AMA leadership including BOT, physicians, patients and the public.
    • Work with AMA International Relations to provide substantive support for World Medical Association and other international medicine activities.
  • People Management
    • Provide appropriate training, guidance, and leadership for all professional staff.
    • Set goals, evaluate performance, and develop and advance staff skills/expertise.

Qualifications
  • JD, PhD or equivalent degree in a medical professionalism and bioethics relevant field.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in health care ethics policy development and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the AMA Code of Medical Ethics and familiarity with key organizations involved in the regulation of professional conduct in medicine.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in people management; able to grow and mentor talent.
  • Demonstrated legal and/or bioethics research skills with strong writing and editing experience.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, including committee work experience.
  • Project management experience, including managing staff effectively.
  • Proven experience in publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Experience in the administration of a budget and team operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, including presentations on complex topics to diverse audiences, and experience with media relations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a wide diversity of colleagues and work with minimal supervision.
Benefits

This is an exempt position. Salary range: $152,939–$206,519, based on qualifications and experience. Employees are also eligible to participate in an incentive plan. The American Medical Association offers comprehensive benefits; additional details are available upon request.

This role administers the AMA’s lobbying compliance program, ensuring adherence to the Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA) through detailed coordination of compliance activities, reporting, and education. Coordinates all functions of the Council on Legislation’s meetings and initiatives, aids with the Reference Committee process as needed.

Responsibilities Lobbying Compliance Administration
  • Administers and maintains the lobbying compliance program and its implementation plan to ensure robust adherence to federal requirements.
  • Prepares compliance reports, disclosures, schedules, and documentation while actively monitoring communication and developments related to federal lobbying laws and reporting requirements.
  • Files compliance reports and obtains/documents appropriate approvals prior to filing.
  • Develops and delivers educational sessions on LDA compliance for AMA staff and facilitates internal communications to strengthen organization‑wide compliance.
  • Trains all new lobbyists and registers each new lobbyist with the House and Senate.
  • Provides guidance to lobbyists, external Federation staff, and AMA consultants regarding filings of required disclosure reports and general LDA questions.
  • Responds to questions from external Federation staff and AMA consultants regarding general LDA questions.
  • Conducts independent outreach to House, Senate, and Administration ethics offices as necessary to support compliance with applicable LDA and gift rules requirements.
  • Maintains and enhances compliance resources, forms, and documentation to support compliance efforts.
Council Meeting Coordination and Support
  • Coordinates with the Secretary of the Council on Legislation and the Division Director.
  • Plans and coordinates meetings and other activities associated with the Council including providing Council Members, Division staff, and ARC staff with information for meetings, conference calls, and other legislative and regulatory requests.
  • Coordinates the development, assembly, and distribution of Council workbooks/PDFs.
  • Coordinates with Meeting Services staff in obtaining hotel reservations for Council Members and staff, and plans Council dinners.
  • Maintains Council Membership records and facilitates communication with Council Members and Board Office staff as necessary, as well as distribution of required materials.
  • Prepares budget information for use in Council meeting and budget planning.
  • Aids in the administration of Council workgroups and helps to undertake projects for the Council including, but not limited to, tracking relevant legislation, taking and distributing meeting notes, undertaking research related to Council projects as needed, and helping to format, standardize, and finalize document creation.
Reference Committee Support
  • Supports the Secretary for Reference Committee B in coordinating committee activities and operations.
  • Helps with the tracking, organization, and creation of materials including talking points, resolution charts, background information and more for the Reference Committee.
  • Supports the development of the Reference Committee reports before and during the House of Delegates meetings, including attending the House of Delegates meetings twice a year.
  • Facilitates communication with the Reference Committee, Council on Legislation Members, Division staff, and ARC, about the Reference Committee process.

May include other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements
  1. Associate's degree required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  2. 5+ years of experience supporting public policy, compliance administration, board or council activities, or related functions.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory process.
  4. Strong writing and analytical skills. Ability to conceptualize issues, synthesize data / information and develop reports that require limited review.
  5. Exceptional communications skills, including the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner, and to generate meaningful dialogue on key issues.
  6. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and execute multiple, concurrent projects, prioritize work assignments, and maintain a budget; ability to handle ambiguity and adapt effectively to changing circumstances.
  7. Highly organized, efficient, and detail-oriented; Critical thinking skills required.
  8. Curiosity in varied healthcare public policy issues.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as well as work independently.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $90,931 - $120,244. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience. This role represents the "Voice of the User" and "Voice of the Customer" for platform and product development within the JAMA Network digital portfolio. This role will develop and execute platform management and improvement strategy for JAMA Network, the flagship medical journal JAMA and 12 other leading peer review publications. The role will research and educate leadership on new technologies (AI and other new approaches) to support the periodical publishing business, manage platform and development vendors, ideate and develop web sites, seek investment and enhance online products, grow engagement and revenue, optimize workflows and costs, mitigate risks, and improve organizational culture and sustainability. This role also responds to the needs of external advertising, licensing, and institutional customers through support operations and new development.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Development & Execution of Platform Product Strategy

  • Facilitate strategic planning and drive development roadmap to respond to pressures on the JAMA Network and work closely with leadership to align strategic priorities.

  • Develop B:C clinician, researcher, author-facing and B:B institutional, advertiser, and corporate products and business plans including market, competitive, and financial analysis for new and expanded engagement and revenue; recommend investments to management.

  • Lead definition of requirements from business objectives and user needs including persona development, problem/solution analysis, customer interviews and other forms of generative product research.

  • Establish ongoing product refinement processes, ongoing user feedback procedures, and build consensus around product upgrades and continuous improvements that bring increased customer satisfaction and margin growth.

  • Align go-to-market execution with editorial, marketing, and sales to ensure seamless product integration and market penetration.

  • Foster strong collaboration among leadership and key stakeholders to ensure alignment and advancement of strategies and goals and translation of strategic plans into operating plans.

  • Communicate a clear product vision reflecting the audience, editorial and financial plans to grow JAMA Network's competitiveness within the academic publishing and healthcare AI space.

  • Conduct customer research inclusive of human-centered design principles to uncover unmet needs and market opportunities; balance with continual competitive monitoring to ensure long term market growth.

  • Guide the digital transformation of JAMA Network from a print publisher to a web presence offering a 'premier' destination for MD researchers and clinicians worldwide; balancing guidance for product strategy and publishing staffing from old models to the new.


Manage platform operations

  • Oversee design and day-to-day agile development workflow across all platform deployments.

  • Lead product lifecycle discussions to continually review the product portfolio for opportunities to streamline and close underperforming or aging products and application.

  • Work closely with AMA Ed Hub Director of Product to support shared development, roadmaps, and provide systems knowledge to support development and operational activities.

  • Manage platform vendors, ensure productivity goals and defect caps are monitored and managed, identify SLA failures early and alert management to risks non-compliance prior to active issues.

  • Provide leadership to the support and QA group, train new functionality, assist with triage, communicate upcoming releases and develop test plans.

  • Oversee ticket reporting system, ensure effective triage and escalation of bugs and help requests, and identify new feature requests to populate roadmap, ensuring internal customers are heard and responded to in a consistent manner.

  • Manage digital tools, integrations, middleware and services relied upon by digital marketing to drive personalization and targetable customer conversions (CDP, SMS, Email, and supporting databases).

  • Lead the financial tracking and budgeting process for JAMA Network platform and supporting tools, ensure increases in costs are identified and work with leadership to generate strategies to maintain profit targets.


ROI Generation & Growth in Engagement, Revenue and Cost-control

  • Partner with revenue team, marketing and operations leadership, evaluate performance against established goals and benchmarks, drive revenue and engagement growth, and ROI.

  • Partner with marketing to tightly align campaigns with revenue and traffic goals, coordinate product and marketing plans to deliver on JAMA Network strategic goals.

  • Collaborate with the JAMA Network revenue teams, develop strategies to grow market share, subscription, and revenue for new and existing products.

  • Automate digital marketing, workflows and tools targeting streamlined efficient delivery of content with minimal FTE impact and increasing satisfaction of end users.

  • Repackage existing content for new customers and revenue channels.

  • Assist editorial and marketing in customer research with end users and paying institutional, licensing and advertising customers, develop personas and online journeys for platform users.

  • Develop, maintain, and extend data availability, KPI measurement and metric dashboards to support business operations, marketing and sales.

  • Continually collaborate with leaders across the AMA units and IT to ensure consistency with the enterprise architecture and leverage shared technologies, tools, processes that impact speed to value and time to market, and identify opportunities to generate scale for impact and cost control benefiting the AMA as a whole.

  • Collaborate with IT and sourcing to solicit proposals, identify new vendors to cost-effectively deliver on strategy and product roadmaps, negotiate contracts and implement new solutions.


Staff Management

  • Lead, mentor and provide management oversight for professional staff.

  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.

  • Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 1.BA or BS required, with PMP, and Six Sigma or similar certifications preferred

  • 2.10+ years' experience in developing and managing digital products: authoring requirements, generating acceptance criteria, releasing products to a wide and mature end user audience

  • 3.10+ years' experience in publishing industry and/or digital education business with advanced knowledge of revenue streams and cost structures of complex publishing organizations

  • 4.5+ years experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent

  • 5.Experience with stage-gate, lean, and/or agile product development processes, representing the voice of customer, business, and user as lead 'product owner' within agile software development team frameworks

This role will occasionally represent the AMA and this work at national conferences. In addition to client‑facing work, this role contributes to the development of toolkits, presentations, and other resources, and provides insights on organizational well‑being. This role also serves as Joy in Medicine reviewer. This role serves as a recognized expert within the AMA and requires in-depth and/or breadth of expertise in their job discipline and broad knowledge of other job disciplines within the business unit. This role leads resolution of multi‑dimensional/unique problems that have a broad impact on the AMA and contributes to the development of business unit strategy.

Responsibilities Client Advisory and Thought Leadership
  • Deliver 1:1 and small group conversations on well‑being with health systems, including preparation, facilitation, and follow‑up guidance.
  • Deliver Organizational Biopsy report‑outs for leadership teams at participating organizations and 1:1 coaching sessions with leaders at Health System Partner member organizations.
  • Drawing on AMA's compendium of presentations and resources, prepare tailored talk tracks and supplemental slides, infused with professional experience and knowledge of the specific client.
  • Support other members of the MMX, Organizational Biopsy, and Joy in Medicine service teams on individual and global client acquisition, retention, and engagement efforts.

Resource Development

  • Document client activities and information in any CRMs, trackers, or other knowledge‑management system as prescribed by program standard operating procedures.
  • As a subject matter expert in organization leadership best practices, ensure its included in content and future iterations of the program.
  • Responsible for research to grow AMA knowledge in the field of well‑being.
Market Insights and Program Strategy
  • Participate in (and occasionally lead) cross‑functional program evaluation and improvement projects to update operations, enhance value, and pilot new approaches.
  • Contribute subject matter expertise to inform updates to the Joy in Medicine criteria, Organizational Biopsy question sets, and the overall conceptual framework for well‑being grounded to ensure they reflect emerging best practices and academic literature.
  • Identify and address gaps in current tools, process, and approaches, often in collaboration with other team members.
  • Advocate for sound methodological practices in the design and execution of surveys and evaluation criteria.

May include other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements
  1. PhD required.
  2. 10+ years of experience in psychology required; experience in organizational psychology strongly preferred.
  3. Experience leading 1:1 and group conversations with senior executive audiences; deep understanding of change management, current health system context, well‑being.
  4. Research experience in burnout and wellbeing is required; a record of published research and applied intervention work in healthcare settings preferred.
  5. Proven ability to design and lead advisory conversations with senior health system leaders (or equivalent), including preparation, facilitation, synthesis of insights, follow‑up guidance.
  6. Experience delivering assessment‑based report‑outs and coaching conversations, translating qualitative and quantitative inputs into clear findings, implications, and recommendations.
  7. Ability to apply shared frameworks, criteria, and tools consistently.
  8. Demonstrated ability to identify patterns, gaps, and recurring needs and translate those insights into recommendations for program, tool, or process improvement.
  9. Experience contributing subject‑matter expertise to the evolution of frameworks, criteria, and research agendas.
  10. Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  11. Strong written communication skills, including the ability to independently develop clear, well‑structured slide decks and written materials for executive, clinical, and external audiences.
  12. Overnight travel to U.S.-based locations multiple times per quarter required.
  13. Excellent verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability present in large group settings.
