Job Summary
This position is located at the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, California. Under the lead direction of the Chief Engineer and the general supervision of the Senior Director of Facilities Management, the Stationary Engineer performs a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of boilers, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, lighting, power, water, water treatment, fire alarms, and other mechanical and building components and systems. This position supports safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the Solano campus facilities and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, heaters, pumps, valves, piping and related components used in steam and heated water distribution systems.
- Operate, maintain, and repair HVAC systems, including refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated refrigerant lines and devices.
- Operate, maintain, and repair air compressors and related systems.
- Maintain, repair, and monitor water distribution, wastewater, and water treatment systems, including filters, softeners, and pool water treatment systems.
- Perform electrical maintenance and repairs on multi‑phase electrical circuits up to 600 volts.
Key Qualifications
- Four (4) years of experience performing duties involving the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, refrigeration, ventilation, and power equipment in large commercial, industrial, or institutional buildings. Experience must include operation and maintenance of air conditioning systems utilizing automatic controls.
- Completion of 700 hours of formalized technical instruction in Stationary Engineering from a recognized program (e.g., Job Corps, Skill Centers, Regional Occupational Programs, trade schools, military training, or Joint Training Partnership Act programs).
- Or an Associate of Arts degree or a certificate in Mechanical Electrical Technology that includes at least 12 semester units in heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems involving automatic controls.
- Two (2) years of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
Licenses, Certifications, and Credentials
- Valid driver's license or ability to obtain by date of hire.
- Ability to obtain AHERA supervisor certification for asbestos‑related work, Cal/OSHA Lead training, and use of respiratory protection. Cal/OSHA mandated medical evaluation required prior to respirator use.
Salary and Benefits
Anticipated hiring range: $80,500 – $100,000 per year. Classification range: $65,844 – $109,200 per year.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management/Operations Management or in Industrial/Manufacturing/Systems Engineering or a closely related field with a strong interest in teaching supply chain management and operations management courses. Knowledge and skills in digital applications are essential. This expertise may include any of the following areas: artificial intelligence (AI), data science, machine learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, robotic process automation (RPA), analytics (e.g., sustainability, risk modeling and resilience), optimization and simulation tools, data visualization, enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms, and technology management.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills and must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to develop an applied research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students, and partnerships with key stakeholders. Demonstrated experience and commitment to hands-on, student-centered learning and teaching, as well as demonstrated ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings are required. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and skills related to process improvement, product development and manufacturing, and packaging systems are desired. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTAt Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, undergraduate architecture students take two full academic years of Building Technology, including “Architectural Technology Fundamentals” in the second year and “Architectural Systems Integration” in the third year. These courses are taught through lectures and associated activity coursework in both year levels and are taught by a collaborative team of faculty. In lecture mode, building technology topics are delivered to the entire student cohort. In activity mode, faculty work with smaller student cohorts on hands‑on applied knowledge activities.

In accordance with the California State University (CSU) Out‑of‑State Employment Policy, the CSU is a state entity whose business operations reside within the State of California and prohibits hiring employees to perform CSU related work outside of California. At Cal Poly, tenure‑line faculty are expected to establish an on‑campus presence.
Subject to further planning and approval, Cal Poly anticipates a possible transition to semester‑based year‑round operations (YRO). Under YRO, full‑time academic year faculty may be assigned to teach in two consecutive semesters (Fall/Spring, Spring/Summer, or Summer/Fall) out of the three semesters offered annually. The two‑semester sequence will constitute the regular academic year appointment. Faculty may also be eligible to teach in the third semester for additional compensation, subject to departmental needs and University policy.

Sections documenting teaching should include syllabi and should explain how the student work demonstrates the candidate’s pedagogical approaches.
- Unofficial transcripts of highest degree earned.
- Three professional references with names and contact information. References will not be contacted without prior notification to applicants.
Prior to appointment, we will require official transcripts confirming degrees and a background check.
