Under direction of the Court Administrator and the Deputy District
Court Administrator, Administrative Project and Research Attorney
Magistrate provides project support, legal research and analysis, and
limited magistrate duties as part of the District Court Administration
team.
The Administrative Project and Research Attorney
Magistrate will primarily assist the Court Administrator in projects
associated with District Court procedures, drafting policy, analyzing
and implementing changes in law or agency procedure, training staff,
working with administration to ensure compliance with state
administrative rules, represent the court in various agency and
community events and meetings, serve as a staff resource, and manage
several state and federal grants for the courts.
The
Attorney will participate in supervisor and administrative team
meetings and other collaborative efforts with supervisors, outside
associations, administration and will provide legal guidance as
needed. The Attorney may work on projects for any court as directed by
the Court Administrator.
- Serve as a resource to supervisors and staff as needed;
- Research and analyze legal documents, contracts, directives, SCAO memorandum, statutes, and case law as needed for court administration and judges;
- Research, prepare and provide memorandums of law, opinions, briefs, policies, short responses, or other documents as requested by court administration;
- Stay current with relevant law, analyze application and make recommendations for procedural changes as needed for compliance;
- Assist the Court in project management and implementation including court management software changes, updates and additions as requested;
- Serve as duty magistrate and back up magistrate as needed;
- Monitor and improve Calhoun County metrics as necessary for caseload management;
- Assist with grant identification, application, management and implementation as requested;
- Prepare administrative reports to Court Administrator as requested;
- Complete special projects and assignments as requested by the Court Administrator;
- Participate in state or regional collaborative associations and efforts on behalf of the Court as requested;
- Train court staff as requested by Court Administration;
- Represent the Office at any events, conferences or meetings as requested.
- Any other assignments necessary for the Court as assigned by the Court Administrator
Graduation from accredited law school is required. Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan. Resident of Calhoun County required for Magistrate duties.
Experience & Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and solve process and legal issues.
- Computer skills in data analytics, database utilization, word processing and spreadsheets preferred.
- Communication skills necessary to interact professionally and in a respectful courteous manner with coworkers and the public.
- Highly organized with strong aptitude for problem solving.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills with proper use of the English language including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Ability to focus on projects requiring high levels of concentration and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle pressures related to compliance, deadlines, and professional expectations.
