Bureau of Reclamation – Lake Thunderbird State Park

Length: Term of positions is 10 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Location: Norman, OK

Living Allowance: $550 /week

AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $1,459  (pre-tax).

Start Date: 6/03/2024

Title of Position: Naturalist

 

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Bureau of Reclamation are seeking an intern who will provide assistance with Conservation Education programs at the Lake Thunderbird State Park Nature Center. Position Responsibilities will include:

·        Assist with the day to day up-keep of the Lake Thunderbird State Park Nature Center

·   Greet visitors at the Nature Center and provide information regarding regional natural resources, and specifically those within the park

·        Design, prepare, publicize, and conduct conservation education related programs and activities

·     Evaluate success of programs

·        Assist with design, construction, and display of education materials and exhibits

·        Maintain information kiosks

·        Other duties may include: general trail maintenance; youth group wildlife tours; youth group fishing trips; wildlife habitat improvement projects such as construction and placement of bird nesting boxes, bat boxes, fisheries habitat, deer food plots; and other related tasks and programs.

 

Minimum Requirements:

·        Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident

·        Must be at least 18 years old by start date of position

·        Must have completed at least 1 year of undergraduate education

·  Must not have been convicted of a felony or be a registered Sex Offender & submit to background screenings

·        Must have a dedication and interest in environmental stewardship and community service

 

 

  Preferred Qualifications:

·        Knowledge of environmental science, natural and cultural history, native fish and wildlife, and general outdoor experience

·   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to exercise initiative and work independently; and to take direction and instruction

·        Knowledge of conservation education practices/activities and associated curriculums (i.e. Project WET, Project WiLD, Project Learning Tree)
