Summary of Position

We have a great opportunity for someone who likes to be a positive role model, hanging outdoors and engaging in youth and teens during summer season. If this sounds exciting then the Summer Recreation Specialist might be just the job for you! Rec on the Spot is a staffed, mobile recreation unit that will make scheduled stops at designated parks throughout the summer engaging youth and teens between ages 5-14 in fun activities. This position is responsible for leading activities for the Recreation On The Spot (ROTS) program and summer special event programs.

The Summer Recreation Specialist is a seasonal non-benefited earning position and will work up to 30 hours/week. Work shifts will primarily be Monday - Thursday from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm and may include an occasional evening or weekend for a special event from approximately June 13 - August 11. Under general direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting with the implementation of summer youth programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recreation Activities
  • Engages youth in recreational activities, programs and events.
  • Engages existing and potential community partners in ROTS program.
  • Implements, plans and evaluates recreation activities for youth ages 5-14 years of age.
  • Recruits and registers participants in ROTS programs.
  • Directs required staff for ROTS programs.
  • Assists in reporting deliverables to Recreation Supervisor.
  • Attends all staff development/training programs and staff meetings.
  • Assists with building and park set-up and clean-up for each event.
  • Maintains order and assures participants are following set policies.
  • Understands policies and procedures to ensure safe environment exists for all participants; completes required reports.
  • Reports any accidents and assists with completing required reports.
  • Handles and reports incidents to the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Participates in first aid and emergency training when provided.
Builds effective relations throughout the organization through communication, collaboration, and effective delivery of services
  • Provides effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Follows oral and written instructions.
  • Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.
  • Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.
  • Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.

Qualifications and Other Information

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to the following:
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience babysitting or supervising multiple children at one time.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 21 years of age.
  • Ability to drive a pick-up with trailer
  • Coursework, classes or training leading to a college degree in Recreation, Education, Human Services or related field.
  • Experience working with the public and providing customer service.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Examples of lifting and carrying requirements include, but are not limited to, boxes, books and recreation equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, color vision, distance vision and depth perception.

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position will be primarily located at various City parks, possibly during inclement weather. This position works independently as well as closely with others. The noise level in the work environment is typically quiet, but may be exposed to loud noises during various recreation activities.
