Department: Editorial

We are looking for a talented and experienced regional opinion columnist to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about local journalism and have a strong track record of writing well-researched, thought-provoking opinion pieces that are relevant to our regional audience.

Gannett is the largest legacy media company in the country and is committed to investing in local journalism. We believe that local journalism is essential to a healthy democracy, and we are committed to providing our readers with the information they need to make informed decisions about their communities.

As a regional opinion columnist with Gannett, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in your community. You will be able to use your voice to raise awareness of important issues, to challenge the status quo, and to inspire change. You will also be part of a team of talented journalists who are passionate about their work and committed to public service.

This position is remote and can be based anywhere in the US, except for Alaska and Hawaii. If you live near one of our local newsrooms, you may have the option to use that as a base of operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Write 2-3 opinion pieces per week on a variety of topics of interest to our regional audience, including politics, news, arts and culture, and business.
  • Conduct thorough research and interviews to support your arguments.
  • Write in a clear, concise, and engaging style that is accessible to a general audience.
  • Stay up to date on current events and trends in your region.
  • Work closely with the Deputy Opinion Editor to develop and execute your editorial calendar.
  • Promote your work through social media and other channels.
  • Develop and execute a content strategy for our weekly/bi-weekly newsletter, reaching a growing audience of engaged readers.
  • Research and analyze current events, political trends, and cultural issues from a center-right perspective.
  • Craft compelling and persuasive content that informs, challenges, and entertains readers.
  • Conduct interviews with experts and thought leaders to provide diverse viewpoints and enrich your content.
  • Fact-check all information and ensure content adheres to journalistic standards of accuracy and fairness.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Audience to develop engaging headlines, visuals, and calls to action.
  • Stay informed about the latest digital publishing trends and optimize content for email deliverability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a journalist, with a focus on opinion writing.
  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for local journalism and a commitment to public service.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer, pre-employment background check, drug screen and motor vehicle record check.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to work with a talented team of journalists and editors.
  • Chance to make a difference in your community by helping to save local journalism.
