Position Summary:
UCI Public
Health is dedicated to the achievement of health equity for all
populations through teaching, research, service and public health
practice locally and globally. Championing the principles of
evidence-based public health science, the program aspires to
understand and impact population level social, biological and
environmental determinants of health and well-being. Drawing from the
diverse expertise of its faculty, it aims to educate the future
workforce of California and beyond through exceptional programs and
experiential learning opportunities. The Program in Public Health is
made up of four academic departments. We are in the process of
transitioning to a school.
Under the general supervision of
the Director of Student Affairs, the academic advisor provides high
quality support to undergraduates, faculty, and staff in the Program
in Public Health. Advise undergraduates about a variety of procedures
and requirements for completing their degrees. Assist undergraduates
with the interpretation of University policies and procedures,
transferability of courses, course substitutions, and change of major.
Utilize basic counseling skills to assess students' needs especially
for certain student populations (i.e., EAP, IOP, International
Students, athletes, freshmen, etc.). Assist with various Public Health
events and activities along with the selection and training of the
student advisors who are part of the Peer Academic Advisor Program.
Works independently under general supervision.

Required:
- 2-3 years of related work experience
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of departmental / school / college courses and majors.
- Knowledge of department / school / college policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
- Ability to multi-task. Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
- Desire and ability to speak and present at public events such as recruitment fairs, workshops and seminars.
- Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.
- Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends for special events.
- Proven ability to work as a member of a team and collaborate effectively with other staff, faculty, students, and the general public.
- Must also be able to work independently, utilizing good sound judgment, by managing time constraints and competing deadlines.
- Working knowledge of University Registrar Systems including WebAdmin, DegreeWorks, EEE/Canvas, ESOC, WebRoster, WebGrades, etc.
- Knowledge of University, State, and National Policies governing Student Records, including student's right of privacy and disclosure of information (FERPA).
- Knowledge of UC and UCI policies, the UCI Catalogue, and Academic Senate Rules and Regulations.
- Occasional nights and evenings.
