500 jobs in Northern Ireland at risk as Morgan McLernon faces closure

Culina Group subsidiary Morgan McLernon will shutter its business, affecting 500 jobs in Lurgan. 

The logistics company has confirmed the proposal to wind down the operations.

A spokesperson said: “A period of meaningful consultation has now been entered into with those colleagues affected.”

With over 140 vehicles and over 50 years in operation, it serves clients like Marks and Spencer, Tesco, and Aldi.

In 2017, Culina Group acquired a majority stake in Morgan McLernon.

This made it the largest haulage operation in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd expressed concerns about the closure.

He said: “This announcement will be devastating news for the workers at the company and for the local economy.”

“It should not be lost on anyone that the company has pinned much of the blame for this announcement on the Brexit fallout,”

Carla Lockhart, Democratic Unionist Party MP for the area, echoed the sentiment, describing Morgan McLernon as a “major employer” within her constituency.
