Italian hospital employee skipped work for 15 years but still earnt £464,000 in pay

A hospital employee in Italy has found to have skipped work for 15 years but still collected his wages amounting to the huge sum of €538,000 (£464,000).

The civil servant Salvatore Scumace, 66, allegedly stopped turning up to work at the Ciaccio hospital in Catanzaro in 2005. The employee has been accused of threatening his manager to stop her from filing a disciplinary report against him. When that manager later retired the man’s ongoing absence was never noticed by her successor or staff in human resources.

Nicknamed as the “King of absenteeism,” Salvatore Scumace is now being investigated for fraud, extortion and abuse of office.

As well as six managers at the hospital who are facing charges over their colleague’s alleged absenteeism.

This latest fraud incident comes five years after the government tightened laws against employees not showing up to work after several high-profile police investigations found out this was a problem in the public sector.

In another ongoing fraud investigation the police in Italy have also used secret CCTV cameras to catch 35 town hall workers in Sanremo who had been cheating the time management system for at least two years. They alledge that the wives of two of the town hall workers had been using their husbands’ staff cards to sign in for them. Other staff members have been accused of tapping in their staffcards then leaving to go shopping with friends.
