Dangerous jobs: New York high-rise construction workers risk huge falls

Huge skyscrapers create a spectacular skyline in cities like New York.

However, someone has to build them, and that's one of the more dangerous jobs around.

Working at great heights has huge risks, and building upwards is particularly dangerous.

Falls from high buildings are the leading cause of death amongst construction workers, and high-rise buildings for a significant number of these.

A high-rise building is defined as being 12 storeys or more.

The construction of the buildings is highly complex, which means workers need to use special techniques and have increased safety measures to ensure they're kept as safe as possible.

Manhattan is known as the home of the high-rise

Manhattan is well-known for its skyscrapers and more and more are springing up.

Over the last 11 years, developers have built 13 high-rise buildings in Manhattan, with 15 more currently under construction and 19 more in the process of being approved.

While the projects provide a lot of job opportunities, there are also a lot of risk involved.

As well as falls, workers find themselves at risk of electrocution and extreme weather.

Historic dangers

There is a huge emphasis on safety in 2023, but that hasn't always been the case.

For example, the construction of the tallest buildings, like the Empire State Building and The Chrysler Building.

According the OHSA, 10 people died during the building of the Empire State Building.

Astonishingly, the iconic tower took just a year to build between 1930 and 1931.

Tragically, five workers lost their lives during the first construction.

60 workers also died in the construction of the World Trade Center, which finished in 1973.

One worker fell 55 storeys to his death during this time.
