New Walmart truck drivers could earn as much as $110,000 in their first year with the company.

The Independent reports the retail giant has announced drivers‘ pay will rise above the annual rate of $87,500 in their first year.

This means a £22,500 pay rise over the course of the year.

Walmart employs 12,000 drivers, who it claims are paid double the national average for a long-haul driver of $56,491.

They have the vital job of ensuring the firm’s stores are kept full.

Drivers can enlist in a 12-week “Walmart Academy” training scheme run by current drivers and tutors, which is hoped to address a shortage of supply chain workers across the US.

A statement from Walmart said: “Over the course of a 12-week program, supply chain associates in the Dallas, Texas, and Dover, Delaware, areas earned their commercial driver’s license (CDL) and became full-fledged Private Fleet Walmart drivers.

Walmart said of its new training school: “Fortunately, we have some of the best in the business already employed.”

CNBC also reported Walmart would pay the $5,000 needed for a license.

Walmart says it expects to train between 400 and 800 drivers this year and eventually will open the school to the whole of the US.

That shortage came amid a national shortage of supply chain workers, which raised fears about shortages of items in stores and delays to deliveries of goods.
