Elon Musk grants amnesty to banned accounts on Twitter

Elon Musk has announced Twitter will grant "general amnesty" to a number of previously banned accounts starting next week.

Musk's move follows him asking Twitter users in a poll whether accounts that had "not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam" should be reinstated.

Mr Musk has already restored some accounts, including that of former US President Donald Trump.

Mr Musk's poll received over 3.1 million responses, with 72.4 percent voting "Yes."

He later tweeted: "The people have spoken. Amnesty begins next week.”

He also used the Latin phrase "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" meaning "the voice of the people is the voice of God."

Twitter's boss did not elaborate on how the amnesty process would work.

He reactivated Donald Trump's account last week after a poll in which users narrowly supported the decision.

However, the former US president has stated that I "don't see any reason" to return to the social media platform, despite his previous prolific tweeting - a major factor in him winning the presidency.

After Trump supporters attacked the US Capitol in 2021, his Twitter account was banned on the grounds that it may incite violence.

Mr Musk has also restored rapper Ye (formerly Kanye West) and influencer Andrew Tate's Twitter accounts.

However, the multibillionaire stated that conspiracy theorist Alex Jones will be barred from returning to Twitter.

He previously stated that no decision on banned accounts would be taken until a moderation board was formed.

After months of fighting, Mr Musk finalized his $44 billion takeover of Twitter on October 28.

He has fired half of the firm's 7,500-strong workforce, and hundreds more are reported to have left after an email saying those who remained will be obliged to work long hours and "hardcore" labor.
