Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, has accused Apple of obstructing its efforts to launch its own app store for iPhone and iPad users in Europe.
According to Epic, Apple has twice blocked its plans for an Epic Games Store.
The store would enable European users to download apps to their Apple devices outside of Apple’s App Store for the first time.
In a statement posted on X, Epic alleged Apple rejected its submissions over concerns that the design was “too similar” to Apple’s own App Store.
Epic argued it tries to create an easily understandable store for mobile users.
It said it was adhering to the best practices for disclosing in-app purchases.
Epic claimed Apple’s actions violate the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The act aims to prevent big tech companies from monopolizing digital markets.

The DMA requires Apple to allow European users to download iPhone apps from third-party stores.
Apple has spent many years resisting this.
Epic said: “Apple has rejected our Epic Games Store notarization submission twice now, claiming the design and position of Epic’s ‘Install’ button is too similar to Apple’s ‘Get’ button and that our ‘In-app purchases’ label is too similar to the App Store’s ‘In-App Purchases’ label.
“We are using standard naming conventions and following regulatory best practices.”
This development marks another escalation in the ongoing battle between the two companies.
Epic has challenged Apple’s exclusive control over iPhone app distribution for years.

Fortnite, Epic’s most famous game, was removed from the App Store in 2020.
This was due to a dispute over developer payments and commissions, and it remains absent from Apple’s platform.
Epic expressed readiness to bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe soon, pending the resolution of the current conflict.
Epic said: “Apple’s rejection is arbitrary, obstructive, and in violation of the DMA.
“We’ve shared our concerns with the European Commission.”
Apple said it is working to help Epic Games get its app marketplace approved and live.
It confirmed the Fortnite app has already been approved.
Apple added Epic had previously agreed to differentiate its app store’s appearance from the Apple App Store.
There is some dispute over the download button design, which Apple believes is a minor issue that can be resolved.
