Motorola Solutions To Bring 200 Jobs To Cork With New R&D Facility

Motorola Solutions sign on building

Motorola Solutions will create 200 jobs at its new research-and-development facility in Cork, which will be fully operational by early 2025.

Recruitment is underway for software engineers, designers, developers, and product managers, with all roles to be filled by the end of 2026.

Fergus Mayne, country manager for Ireland and the UK, said: “We’re looking to get up and running soon with a temporary facility, until the end of the year, and then we’re going to move to a more permanent facility in Cork City centre, hopefully during the next year.”

The staff will focus on developing software for Motorola’s land mobile radio (LMR) portfolio, with plans to expand into other technologies.

Cork was chosen due to the strong software skills taught at local universities.

Mayne also noted the housing crisis did not deter the company’s investment decision, acknowledging that housing pressure is common in many cities worldwide.

Motorola Solutions plans to expand its Cork operations to meet the high demand from clients in government, emergency services, transport, and utilities for its video security and analytics services.

This demand has helped offset the impact of the global tech slowdown, which has led to widespread layoffs.

Mayne said: “We’re very different from other tech companies because of our customer base. People want safer streets, safer communities, and that is our focus—how we provide that for governments and emergency services.”

This announcement follows the loss of 200 jobs at medical device manufacturer BD (Becton Dickinson and Company) in Drogheda.

The IDA, Ireland’s state body for foreign direct investment, will publish its half-year results on July 8, offering a clearer picture of Ireland’s business attractiveness.

IDA chief executive Michael Lohan said: “Across the Western world, in every location we’ve looked at, whether it be London or any city, there’s always pressure on housing.”

Motorola Solutions has more than 20,000 employees and over 100,000 customers across 100 countries.

Over the past decade, the company has invested approximately $12 billion (€11 billion) in R&D and acquisitions.

This will be Motorola Solutions’ first establishment in Cork since the 2007 closure of its Blackrock operations, which resulted in the loss of over 300 jobs.
