The UK’s top antitrust watchdog will determine whether the proposed merger of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and Juniper Networks could harm competition.

This follows HPE’s January announcement of its plan to acquire the California-based AI and networking company Juniper for $14 billion.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has set August 14 as the deadline for completing its initial review of the deal.

Through this acquisition, HPE aims to double its networking business and bolster its edge-to-cloud strategy.

Post-merger, HPE expects its networking segment to grow from 18 percent to about 31 percent of its revenue.

Juniper provides communication network services and equipment, including routers and switches, to industries such as technology, telecommunications, and finance.

HPE, originating from the renowned Hewlett-Packard founded in 1939, offers cloud services to businesses and governments.

HPE became a separate entity from the computer and printer division, now called HP, in 2015.

Juniper is also expanding its artificial intelligence division, Mist AI, which uses AI and machine learning to enhance wireless access.

Juniper acquired Mist Systems for approximately $400 million in 2019.
