Indeed Axes 1,000 Jobs As Company Is “Too Complex”

Indeed Tower in Austin Downtown

Indeed CEO Chris Hyams announced the recruitment giant is laying off around 1,000 employees.

Hyams wrote to employees: “I am sad to share the news that we have made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount through a layoff.

“Unlike last year, where our reduction was driven by cost savings, we are taking this action because we need to simplify our organization to make it easier and faster for us to make decisions, and help us to more effectively grow revenue and hires.”

The company reported employing 2,800 people in Austin last summer but declined to provide an updated headcount following the announcement.

The company has not commented on how these cuts will impact its Austin, Texas, office beyond Hyams’ letter.

Hyams said the new structure is to streamline operations and promote efficiency.

He also said it will support the company’s goal of helping 100 million people secure jobs by 2030.

“Our organization is still too complex, we still have significant duplication of effort and too many organizational layers that slow down decision-making”

In March 2023, Indeed cut 2,200 jobs, or about 15 percent of its global workforce.

It cited a cooling job market and reduced service demand.

The latest round of layoffs will primarily affect US employees.

They will focus on research and development (R&D) and some go-to-market teams.

Hyams said the company’s leadership, HR, legal, and diversity teams worked “to ensure objectivity and equity in the decision-making process.”

He said: “The final selections have had no measurably disproportionate impact on women and under-represented genders or the under-represented minority population in the U.S.”

Employees outside of Ireland, the UK, and Australia will soon receive notifications about their employment status, including details on separation packages, which have been enhanced compared to last year.

These packages will include severance, healthcare payments where applicable, and outplacement services.

Hyams said: “Despite our efforts so far, our organization is still too complex, we still have significant duplication of effort and too many organizational layers that slow down decision-making.

“We have been working to simplify every aspect of our business, but without meaningful change, we can’t get where we need to go.”

To address these issues, Indeed will significantly restructure its R&D team, reduce management layers, and implement measures to simplify decision-making.
