OpenAI’s ChatGPT will no longer answer questions about future election results, after an investigation by Sky News.Â
ChatGPT now replies with, “Sorry, I don’t have information about the results of that election,” when asked about upcoming votes.
The change was prompted by Sky News’ findings ChatGPT inaccurately predicted election outcomes.Â
For instance, the chatbot claimed the July general election in Britain would result in a major victory for the Labour Party.
It forecasted it it would win 467 seats while the Conservatives would secure only 101 seats.Â
It also mentioned the Liberal Democrats winning 46 seats.
Further inaccuracies included ChatGPT stating President Joe Biden won re-election against former president Donald Trump in the 2024 general election.Â
When asked about the 2024 European elections, it provided specific details about shifts in political power and seat distributions, including significant gains for right-wing parties.
In response to these errors, OpenAI implemented a fix to ensure ChatGPT refuses to answer questions about unresolved elections.
The company now directs users to authoritative sources like the UK Electoral Commission website.
A spokesperson for OpenAI said: “This fix has been applied to many queries already, and we’re working urgently to ensure it is applied broadly.”

Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT’s popularity has surged.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it had 100 million unique visitors and 590 million views in January 2023.
Other AI chatbots have also faced scrutiny over election-related queries.
In March, Google’s generative AI chatbot Gemini was restricted from answering election questions in countries where voting occurs.
Similarly, Meta’s Llama 2 states future elections have not yet occurred despite imminent voting dates for the EU and UK elections.Â
Meta did not respond to requests for comment.
