X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is rumored to be increasing efforts to sell off disused user handles, some of which could cost $50,000.
A report by Forbes revealed a division within Elon Musk’s social media giant called @Handle Team, is developing a marketplace for buying account names that are no longer used.
It also reveals Twitter has reached out to potential buyers, proposing a starting fee of $50,000 for a purchase.

When Forbes reached out to X’s press email, the automated reply was succinct: “Busy now, please check back later.”
Rumors have circulated for a while about Musk’s intention to launch such a program.

In November 2022, Musk said many handles were occupied by “bots and trolls” and that he aimed to “liberate” them soon.
Forbes says discussions about sell X/Twitter handles were underway the following month.
In January, the New York Times revealed Musk wanted to release up to 1.5 billion usernames.

And in May, X started removing inactive accounts.
X’s website still says the company is not yet releasing inactive usernames.
It urges people to log in every 30 days to ensure their accounts are not deemed inactive.
