Aer Lingus Pilots’ Industrial Action Causes Flight Cancellations

Aer Lingus pilots have started industrial action, which has cancelled hundreds of flights and disrupted the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers.

The pilots implemented “work to rule” actions.

They are refusing to work overtime, accepting changes in set rosters, or responding to out-of-hours management requests.

Additionally, an eight-hour strike is planned for Saturday, June 22.

The dispute centres around pay.

Pilots are demanding a 24 percent increase to match inflation since their last raise in 2019.

Aer Lingus has countered with an offer of a 12.5 percent increase or more, depending on discussions about “productivity and flexibility.”

Ireland’s prime minister, Simon Harris, said it is “absolutely vital” that a resolution is found.

He said: “My challenge to the parties now is to bring that engagement forward, rather than putting people through a prolonged period of agony and chaos, and then engaging in the end anyway.

“This dispute will be settled the same way every dispute is settled: compromise, engagement, sitting around a table. That’s what needs to happen.”
