Elon Musk Says AI Will Soon Be “Smarter Than the Smartest Humans”

Elon Musk at Viva Technology (Vivatech) 2023

Elon Musk has said AI will soon be "smarter than the smartest humans."

Speaking to Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norway's Wealth Fund, Musk predicted the technology could exceed human intelligence by 2025 or 2026.

He said: "If you define AGI as smarter than the smartest human, I think it's probably next year, within two years."

Musk said there were some challenges in AI development, including the necessity for advanced computing chips.

He added the training of Grok's version 2 model - his own AI project - was being particularly affected by a shortage of Nvidia H100 GPUs, requiring about 20,000 units.

Musk said future versions will need even more significant resources, with expectations of 100,000 Nvidia chips for the Grok 3 model onwards.

He also pointed out electricity availability would become a critical factor for AI's evolution in the upcoming years.

Musk has repeatedly pointed out the potential dangers of the advancement of AI technology.

In 2023, he predicted it would take five to six years for "superintelligence" to emerge.

At the time, he said: "“If I could press pause on AI or really advanced AI digital superintelligence I would.

"It doesn’t seem like that is realistic so xAI is essentially going to build an AI. In a good way, sort of hopefully.

“It’s actually important for us to worry about a Terminator future in order to avoid a Terminator future. "
