New York City bans TikTok on government devices

New York City has joined a growing trend by banning TikTok from government-owned devices, citing security concerns.

It led to the deactivation of popular city-operated TikTok accounts. 

Mayor Eric Adams' spokesperson, Jonah Allon, said the city’s Cyber Command determined that the app “posed a security threat to the city’s technical networks.”

Government agencies must uninstall TikTok within a month.

Employees will lose access to the app and its website on city-owned devices and networks.

Mayor Adams, the Department of Sanitation, and the Department of Parks and Recreation updated their bios: “This account was operated by NYC until August 2023. It’s no longer monitored.”

Numerous governmental bodies have already restricted the app over the potential risks of giving Beijing access to sensitive user data

TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.

New York State has banned the social media app on state-issued mobile devices for over three years, with some exceptions.

Most bans have been confined to official devices,.

However, Montana recently passed a law banning the app throughout the state, from January 1. 

TikTok is contesting this legislation on various grounds, including First Amendment violations.

TikTok has chosen not to comment on the latest ban. 

The City's Department of Sanitation became an unexpected TikTok sensation.

It had gained nearly 50,000 followers, showcasing workers and sharing memes related to trash-collection schedules. 

@NYGov, the official account for the state will remain.

It recently embraced the "girl dinner" trend with a video featuring a "New York State girl dinner" consisting of pizza, Hudson Valley cheese, Tate's cookies, and bagels.
