TikTok Starts Auto Labeling AI-Generated Content

TikTok has initiated a new policy to automatically label content created using artificial intelligence on its platform.

This measure involves applying "Content Credentials," a digital watermarking technology developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, to AI-generated videos and images on the app.

According to TikTok, these credentials will attach metadata to content, enabling the platform to identify and label AI-generated materials instantly. 

The implementation of this technology has started for images and videos and will soon extend to audio-only content.

The social media giant already mandates content generated using its in-app AI effects be labeled and requires creators to disclose the use of realistic AI in any content they produce. 

The new update will broaden the scope of this requirement to include AI-generated content uploaded from external sources.

This update is particularly timely as lawmakers and specialists grow concerned about the potential misuse of AI to spread misinformation, especially with the 2024 elections on the horizon.

TikTok has joined the Content Authenticity Initiative.

This is a consortium led by Adobe that aims to set industry standards for transparency and traceability in the digital production of images, videos, and audio clips.

Earlier this year, TikTok, alongside other major tech players like Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, pledged to address AI-driven misinformation during this election cycle. 

President Joe Biden's April legislation gives TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, a nine-month ultimatum to divest the app or face a ban. 

TikTok has challenged this decision, filing a lawsuit against the US government, citing a violation of the First Amendment.
