**Marine Painter - San Diego, CA - $20 to $25 - 1st Shift (6:30am - 3:00pm)**
**Job Description**
+ This role prepares and paints wood and metal surfaces on ships and shipyard structures, ensuring high-quality protective coatings that meet strict safety and technical standards. You will perform surface preparation, masking, mixing and applying coatings by hand and spray, inspect and touch up finished work, and support related shipyard activities as needed.
**Responsibilities**
+ Set up tools, materials, and equipment at the job site to perform surface preparation and painting tasks safely and efficiently.
+ Clean and prepare wood and metal surfaces by removing dirt, grease, rust, scale, and other contaminants using appropriate tools, solvents, and cleaning materials.
+ Mask and tape areas that do not require painting to protect adjacent surfaces during coating application.
+ Set up and operate spray paint equipment, including conventional and airless systems, to apply coatings according to specifications.
+ Mix paint and coating materials in accordance with the Product Data Sheet (PDS), ensuring correct ratios, viscosity, and application properties.
+ Apply coatings using hand brushing and spray painting techniques on parts, equipment, and structural surfaces on the interior and exterior of ships and shipyard buildings.
+ Inspect prepared and painted areas for coverage, finish quality, and defects, and perform touch-up work as needed to meet quality standards.
+ Operate high-reach equipment to prepare and coat hard-to-reach and elevated areas safely.
+ Maintain housekeeping in assigned work areas during and after tasks, including removing scrap, sweeping, and general cleaning.
+ Work with other departments to support cross-trade activities, such as erecting and dismantling scaffolding, water evacuation, load out, and grooming compartments.
+ Attend safety, quality, and process improvement meetings as requested and follow all safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

**Essential Skills**
+ One to three years of experience with hand brush and spray painting applications, or accreditation with SSPC C-12 Certification.
+ Knowledge of basic painting applications, including proper surface preparation and coating techniques.
+ Ability to perform surface preparation procedures, including cleaning, degreasing, rust and scale removal, and masking.
+ Proficiency in mixing paints and coatings according to the Product Data Sheet (PDS), including understanding mixing ratios and application requirements.

**The Role**
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, is seeking qualified marine painters, with 1+ years of hands on Marine painting work experience.
A candidate should know the proper method for applying coatings while maintaining desired MIL thickness. A candidate will be working in a physically demanding environment including confined spaces and heights. A candidate should be able to use power tools, hand tools, or chemicals to accomplish cleaning of surfaces prior to applying coating systems. Nearly every component or structural element aboard ship requires specific coatings, this is why the painter is responsible for selecting and applying a wide variety of marine coating systems. Coatings protect the steel and other surfaces from rust and corrosion, protect the underwater portion from the attachment of marine life, and enhance the general appearance of the ship. The marine painter prepares the surface, masks unpainted areas, sandblasted surfaces, selects the methods of coating application and provides suitable curing conditions. In addition to modern paint techniques, the painter may work with power coating, non-skid, and other special hull treatments. The painter should have the ability to interpret paint schedules, calculate surface areas, estimate the amount of materials required, test the grade, viscosity and fineness of the paint, and perform final quality inspections.

**This Job Listing is for recent or upcoming 2026 High School Graduates.** Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is offering a $500 sign-on bonus to Trade Trainee hires. In addition, Newport News Shipbuilding is offering $500 in relocation bonus to Trade Trainee new hires that live 50 miles or greater from Newport News, VA. Newport News Shipbuilding has partnered with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local Virginia community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer several course-to-hire Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs for individuals interested in learning a trade and working full-time for Newport News Shipbuilding. Courses are offered once a month with 5-15 students per class. The Painter Trainee program is offered at Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA). This (UNPAID) program is 2-weeks (80 hours), 7:00 am - 3:30pm (Monday thru Friday).
Candidates who have received and provide a certificate or diploma in Marine Painting or directly related field are encouraged to apply and may be eligible to waive the completion of the trainee program. Directly related fields include Residential/Commercial Construction, Auto Body, Environmental Cleaning, and/or Coatings Inspector Program.

Almost every component or structural element on aircraft carriers and submarines require specific coatings, making it essential to efficiently select and apply a diverse range of marine coating systems. These coatings protect steel and other surfaces from rust and corrosion, prevent marine life attachment on underwater surfaces, and enhance the ship's overall appearance. Working at Newport News Shipbuilding often involves performing tasks in various weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding, ladders, or elevated platforms and in small, confined spaces such as tanks, compartments, or voids in a ship. **Job Summary:** US Coatings is currently seeking a **Marine Coatings** **Blaster/Painter Helper** . This position must effectively and safely assist the Sandblaster/Painter, Foreman or Supervisor in surface preparation, coatings application and all associated phases of marine coatings.
**Duties and Responsibilities:**
+ As directed by the Sandblaster/Painter, Foreman or Supervisor assists in preparing surfaces and applying coatings to various structures, tanks, piping, and miscellaneous surfaces in accordance with customers specifications and manufacturers recommendations.
+ Assists in assembling, maintenance, repair and cleaning abrasive blasting and painting equipment.
+ May assist in mixing and thinning the coatings according to manufacturer's recommendations.
+ Assist in constructing protective enclosures to avoid overspray of customers equipment.
+ Cooperating with Supervisors and companion workers in carrying out assigned work.
+ Assist in loading, unloading and storage of equipment and supplies.
+ At all times perform work in the safest possible manner. Immediately inform the Supervisor of any unsafe condition.
+ Keep the jobsite clean by keeping it clear of all trash, unused paint materials, etc.
+ Any other duties assigned by Sandblaster/painter, foreman or supervisor **.**
**Key Requirements, Education, and Experience:**
+ Must be able to follow specific directions.
+ Must perform a variety of duties, which may often change.
+ Must have experience working with various blasting equipment, such as sandblasters, UHP water blasters, pots, pumps, and hoppers, various hand tools and power tools.
+ They must be willing to learn all aspects of assigned tasks.
+ Must be proficient in and committed to all safety aspects of assigned tasks, including the proper usage of PPE, such as harnesses, hard hats, eye protection, gloves, and respiratory protection.
+ Must be able to safely lift work materials, up to 100 lbs.
+ Must be able to work in extreme temperatures.
+ Must be able to safely maneuver into and work in confined spaces, through hatches and erected scaffolding, into ship hulls and interior tanks.
+ 2+ years of experience in marine coatings applications.
**Travel:** Must be willing to travel to job sites as current jobs require.
